Thirteen things people carry, and where to start in the Bible with each

Each of these has a passage chosen for it, with the part of the story around it and a question to sit with. All thirteen work right now. Find the one nearest to where you are, or say what is going on in your own words and let it find the closest.

Which of these sounds like where you are? If two of them sound close, either will do.

A kitchen worktop at night with everything put away and one light left on

Anxiety

A mind that will not settle, usually at the hour when there is nothing to be done about any of it. Money, a decision, somebody you love, the thing you keep turning over at midnight.

Sometimes a specific thing sits underneath it and sometimes nothing does, and both count here. This is the one people are most likely to arrive at feeling they have failed twice: once at the thing itself, and again at not being able to stop turning it over.

Matthew 11:28-30

A made bed with one side undisturbed, morning light across it

Grief

The early weeks, when it takes up everything. And the later months, when everybody has gone back to normal and you have not, which is the part that catches you out.

Not only for a death. A marriage, a job you had built a self around, a person who stopped speaking to you, or the version of your life you assumed was coming: all leave something to grieve.

Psalm 34:18

Rain on a window with the room behind it out of focus

Doubt

Questions you cannot ask out loud where you are. A faith that used to be simpler. Reading the same page you always read and feeling nothing come back.

Also the ordinary kind: a decision you cannot see your way through and no clear sense of what you are supposed to do.

James 1:5

A back step and a garden nobody has tended in a while

Hope

Discouraged, out of road, nothing to point at that suggests it changes. Months of the same news, or no news.

The passage here describes hope as something given rather than something you are expected to produce, which matters if you have already tried to produce it and could not.

Romans 15:13

A single chair at a table laid for one

Loneliness

Two different things share one word. Being genuinely on your own, in a house nobody else comes into. And being surrounded by people who do not know you, which catches people off guard because from outside it does not look like loneliness at all.

A full calendar and a busy family can sit on top of it without touching it from being here.

Psalm 25:16-17

A wall calendar in a room going dark

Fear

Something ahead of you with a shape and a date. A scan, a hearing, results due on Thursday, a conversation you can see coming.

Fear on behalf of somebody else belongs here too, which is often the heaviest version and the one people are least likely to say out loud. The passage here opens by admitting the fear rather than instructing anybody out of it.

Psalm 56:3-4

A packed work bag by the front door with a coat over it

Burnout

The work you used to care about has gone flat and you cannot tell whether you need a rest or a change. It shows up with guilt attached, because from outside nothing is obviously wrong.

The job is the same and you are doing it worse, and that is the part people carry alone.

A kitchen counter with a pill organiser, a glass of water and a notebook

Caring for someone

A parent, a partner, a child who needs more than most. Love that has turned into logistics, appointments and medication times, with nobody asking how you are.

The passage here puts the person doing the carrying among those being handled gently, rather than among those he is relying on.

Isaiah 40:11

A bedside table in the small hours with the lamp on

Not sleeping

Awake at three, again. Mind running, tomorrow arriving whether you sleep or not.

The passage here takes being awake at night as a given and does not promise it ends, which is the only honest thing to offer at that hour.

Psalm 63:6-7

A hall table with unopened post and a phone charging beside it

Psalm 13:1-2

A kitchen chair pushed back from a table, seen from the doorway

Psalm 103:8-12

A window open a little with the curtain moving

Peace

Wanting things to be still, and they are not. Nothing settles, and the quiet you keep waiting for does not arrive.

The passage here is said hours before an arrest, to people about to lose everything, and the peace in it is handed over rather than asked for.

If none of them is yours

Then say it in your own words instead, and let it look.

Thirteen headings still cannot cover what people actually carry. Shame does not appear on that list on its own. Nor does resentment, or anger, or wanting to believe something you are no longer sure you do. Plenty of what brings people to a Bible has no tidy word for it at all.

Type a sentence about what happened instead, in whatever words you would use out loud.

What is ready now

Every one of these works today.

The passage, the context around it and the reflection are finished for all thirteen. If you came here for something to read tonight, it is here.

What is in each one

Every topic holds the same four things.

A passage, in the World English Bible, with the King James reading of the same verses underneath. The verses on either side of it, so it is not floating loose from whatever was being said. A short note on why that passage may sit close to the situation. And one question to sit with, which you can ignore.

Psalm 68:6 sets the lonely in families, and it is not the loneliness passage here. The record for that topic says which passages were considered and why this one won.

Pick whichever sounded closest, or skip them and say it in your own words.

If what you are carrying is heavier than a page, this is not the place for it. Nobody is reading what you type here.
