If prices and job news are what you are turning over tonight, you have plenty of company this week. On September 29, 2026, The Conference Board reported that its consumer confidence index fell 6.7 points to 81.9 in September, from 88.6 in August, and that its Expectations Index, which covers consumers' short-term outlook for income, business and the labor market, fell 5.9 points to 63.6, its third monthly decline. In that preliminary survey, run online from September 1 to 23, 21.9 percent said jobs were hard to get, up from 20.3 percent, and 28.4 percent expected fewer jobs in six months, up from 26.1 percent. CFO Dive headlined the release "Consumer confidence sags to 12-year low, eroded by inflation, job anxiety." The index shows how a large sample of consumers feels, so if you recognize yourself in it, many people do. Your own household is its own story.

Matthew 11:28-30, words for the night
Bible Nudge offers this passage for anxiety, in the World English Bible, with the verses around it at Matthew 11:28-30:
28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Jesus speaks in Matthew 11:25-30 to people carrying heavy burdens. The invitation names the heaviness plainly and continues into a way of life with him. It is an invitation spoken in the present tense to the weary, so you can answer it tonight, before anything in the forecast has happened. It gives you words to pray and a place to bring the weariness instead of carrying it alone.
Matthew Henry, Reformed, reads it as offering rest to people burdened by guilt and religious demands while still calling them into discipleship. Enduring Word, evangelical, says Jesus gives a different yoke centered on learning from him. The Catechism of the Catholic Church connects it to the human need for rest in God. Its question: what burden are you trying to carry alone? If money is already short, see Bible verses for financial hardship.

The hour after everyone else has gone to bed.
What the fear is like
The Mental Health Foundation's 2020 report "Taking Sleep Seriously" surveyed UK adults. Of working adults, 37 percent said work, including "worries about job security," reduced their sense of control over sleep, and 25 percent said worrying about money, including bills, affected their sleep in the previous month. Those figures describe UK adults.
On Reddit, in r/AusFinance, on September 15, 2026, one person wrote "Not a whole lot going on in the world to inspire hope and security at the moment." On Reddit, in r/Layoffs, on September 28, 2026, a writer who had just been let go titled a thread "I can't sleep," with "Can I even afford to wait." and "So anxous and worried" (spelling as posted).
What to do with the fear tonight
The NHS Every Mind Matters page on tackling your worries says "Sometimes just getting things out of your head and down onto paper or a notes app on your phone can help you clear your mind and make it easier to work through concerns one by one," and describes "worry time" as "a short period, say 10 or 15 minutes, every day or so before bed to write things down and try to find solutions." These are NHS self-help techniques, not treatment or a sure way to sleep, and its problem solving page suggests five or ten minutes on one solvable problem.
Our own suggestion: write the worries down, circle the one that has a step this week (saving a helpline number counts), leave the rest on the page, and pray the passage over what is left.

One page, one pencil, and the rest left there until morning.
What lands badly, and a line that helps
On Reddit, in r/AusFinance, on September 14 and 15, 2026, replies to someone describing worry about the job market included "Go on holiday mate," "Live a little bro," and "This is a mental health issue not a financial issue." Each shrinks the worry or sends it elsewhere. Our own wording:
- "That sounds like a lot to carry. What is the part keeping you up?"
- "Do you want help working out one step for this week, or do you want to be heard first?"
- "I'm here. Can I sit with you while you look at the numbers?"
If you are the friend or pastor, nobody can promise an outcome, and a specific offer helps most, such as a Thursday evening call or a cup of tea. Catholic Charities USA, The Salvation Army and Christians Against Poverty in the United Kingdom each route people to local help; services vary by office, so ask what yours offers.
Other passages for these nights
In Matthew 6:25-34, in the same Sermon, Jesus asks "Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?" and says "Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself." Proverbs 21:5, "The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit; and everyone who is hasty surely rushes to poverty," is a wisdom saying about planning ahead. Psalm 55:22, "Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you," sits inside a lament. For the night, Psalm 4:8, from an evening prayer of David, says "In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety," and Psalm 127:2 says "he gives sleep to his loved ones." More is in Bible verses for worry, Bible verses for losing a job and Psalms for sleep.
Where churches differ on money and faith
If your church teaches that faith brings prosperity, the views differ. The Catechism treats material goods as carrying obligations toward justice and the poor, not as a measure of divine favor. John Piper of Desiring God, Reformed, argues that prosperity teaching promises health and wealth and can burden suffering believers with the idea that too little faith caused it. Kenneth Copeland Ministries, Word of Faith, teaches that God blesses believers materially and that faith and confession connect to provision. The passage on this page is an invitation to a tired person, and what it asks is that the person come.
Where to go next
These lines are for any night that feels too heavy, whatever led to it, and money and job stress is something many people carry. In the United States, call or text 988 for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. In Canada, call or text 9-8-8 through 988.ca. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Samaritans is on 116 123. In Australia, Lifeline is 13 11 14, with Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. Anywhere else, Find A Helpline lists services by country.
Tonight, read Matthew 11:28-30 once aloud with the question "What burden are you trying to carry alone?", then save one free helpline number for your country in your phone. Bible Nudge can take a line in your own words and come back with one passage. Find a passage.
