Bible Verses for the Loss of a Grandfather: Jacob's Blessing, Barzillai and the Man Who Taught You

One person on Reddit's r/GriefSupport wrote, "He was my greatest teacher in life." In another thread there, a commenter wrote, "Seeing his body knowing he wont ever tell us another corny boomer joke is what hurt me the most." Bible Nudge's passage for grief is Psalm 34:18; after it come two grandfathers in the Bible, Jacob and Barzillai.

Where to begin

Tonight

Psalm 34:18, read once, with his name said aloud.

If he blessed you

Genesis 48, Jacob blessing Joseph's two sons.

If he taught you

Psalm 78:4, beside something he taught you.

Psalm 34:18, for tonight

17 The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. 18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

Rescue is named on either side, in verses 17 and 19, and in the middle, verse 18 gives nearness now, company for tonight. Read Psalm 34:18 once, say his name out loud, and stay with one question: what would it mean to let nearness, rather than explanation, be enough today? Bible verses for the loss of a parent reads the verse through its whole psalm.

Jacob, blessing his grandsons

Genesis 48 finds Jacob, also called Israel, near the end of his life, when "the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he couldn’t see." Joseph brings his two sons near, and Jacob "kissed them, and embraced them," saying, "I didn’t think I would see your face, and behold, God has let me see your offspring also."

He crosses his hands on the boys' heads and blesses them in the name of "the God who has fed me all my life long to this day," giving the words "God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh." Rashi, the Jewish commentator, reads that line at Chabad as the wording used in blessing a child. Matthew Henry, from the Reformed tradition, reads the blessing as the faith of the patriarchs handed on. If your grandfather blessed you, set Jacob's blessing beside the memory of his.

Later, "Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees," which the NET Bible notes read as acknowledging them as his own; if your grandfather held great-grandchildren, that line is for him. Bible verses for the death of a father reads Joseph weeping for his father earlier in that chapter.

Barzillai, eighty and plain about it

In 2 Samuel 19, Barzillai is "a very aged man, even eighty years old," who had fed King David at Mahanaim. Offered a place at court, he answers:

Can I discern between good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear the voice of singing men and singing women any more?

He asks to go home, "that I may die in my own city, by the grave of my father and my mother," and sends the younger Chimham on with the king. "Then the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place." Matthew Henry reads him as David's old friend and benefactor. If your grandfather was generous, plain about age, and sent the younger ones ahead, you may know him.

The man who taught you

Moses tells Israel at Horeb to "make them known to your children and your children’s children." In Psalm 78, Asaph writes, "We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh." This week, write down one thing he taught you, how to cast a line, how to back up a trailer, and read Psalm 78:4 beside it.

Psalm 92:14, in a psalm for the Sabbath day, says the righteous "will still produce fruit in old age." Psalm 128:6 is a blessing: "Yes, may you see your children’s children." Proverbs 13:22, a proverb among proverbs, says, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children." Each is a hope families carry, for any grandfather, including one who left little or was hard to love.

When he raised you

For some, this is the loss of a father. One person on Reddit's r/Advice wrote about "my grandfather, who was essentially my father, passing," and added, "Simply put, he was my dad." Generations United, a US organization, calls families where grandparents or other relatives raise children "grandfamilies," and Kinship, a UK charity, describes children raised by relatives or friends when their parents cannot. Bible verses for the death of a father may fit as closely as this page.

When he went slowly

One person wrote on Reddit's r/GriefSupport, "I lost my grandad, 4 or 5 years ago from Alzheimers- but he only passed last week." On Reddit's r/dementia, one wrote, "I miss my grandfather. I miss who he was." and another, "I feel like a terrible person, but I don’t really feel sad."

Pauline Boss named this ambiguous loss in her 1999 book: somebody physically present and psychologically absent. The American Psychological Association's Monitor reported in 2024 that this loss in dementia has "no resolution," and a 2016 model by Meichsner and colleagues calls dementia grief "a specific type of anticipatory grief in response to compounded serial losses of varying magnitude." If you grieved him years ago, or feel little now, families describe both.

Isaiah 46:3-4 is Yahweh speaking to the house of Jacob: "Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you." It suits the years of decline. Bible verses for dementia caregivers reads grief for somebody still here.

If he was hard to love

On Reddit's r/internetparents, one person wrote, "He was a complicated man. Made a lot of mistakes and our whole family suffered for it." The same post says, "he died alone in the hospital." You can hold the harm and the grief together; there is a section on a father who was hard to love, and Psalm 34:18 is for the broken heart itself, whoever he was.

The men in the family

Terry Martin and Kenneth Doka's Men Don’t Cry, Women Do describes two patterns. The Center for Loss and Bereavement says, "Intuitive grievers experience their grief as very intense waves of emotion," while instrumental grievers work through it by doing and solving problems. Doka told Psychotherapy.net in 2009 that the authors stopped tying the patterns to sex. The uncle busy with the paperwork may be grieving too. If your parent has just lost their father, what to say to someone whose parent died has words to send.

Reading at his funeral

If he had a favorite verse or hymn, start there. Otherwise, 2 Timothy 4:6-8 is often chosen: Paul, writing to Timothy as his own death approaches, says, "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith." Enduring Word reads it as Paul's own look back, so a family choosing it borrows his words as a tribute. Genesis 48:15-16 can suit a grandfather who blessed his family.

If not everyone believes, one person posted on Reddit's r/exchristian that "it was super weird how everything came back to god at my grandfather's funeral." Bible verses for a funeral covers readings for a mixed family, Psalm 23 and John 14.

Is he watching over me?

Hebrews 12:1 speaks of "so great a cloud of witnesses," just after the faithful of chapter 11. The Catholic Catechism (946 to 959) teaches the communion of saints, the faithful on earth united with those in heaven, whose prayers can be asked. The Orthodox Church in America teaches it too. John Calvin, from the Reformed tradition, reads the cloud as the witnesses of Hebrews 11, whose testimony surrounds believers. Take the question to your own church.

For a child, and for the one who was not there

Child Bereavement UK says, "The death of a grandparent is often a child or young person’s first encounter with the death of someone important to them." Some become "unusually clingy or anxious," others "may take it all very much in their stride," and younger children may move "in and out of their grief as if they are jumping in and out of a puddle." In the United Kingdom, Child Bereavement UK is on 0800 02 888 40 and Winston's Wish on 08088 020 021; in Canada, Kids Help Phone is 1-800-668-6868; in Australia, Kids Helpline is 1800 55 1800.

Some could not get there in time. One person wrote on Reddit's r/GriefSupport, "I got there and he was unconscious and died 20 minutes later." and "We thought we had more time with him." The grandmother page has a section for the reader who was not there at the end, and Bible verses for sudden death is for the if-only questions.

Questions people ask

When does grief need a doctor? If it stops daily life months on, see one. ICD-11 uses "more than 6 months at a minimum" for prolonged grief disorder, and the APA's DSM-5-TR at least 12 months for adults and 6 for children. Both are thresholds for a diagnosis rather than a length for ordinary grief. Bible verses for grief and healing is for the longer stretch.

Which verses do funeral lists give? QuickFuneral lists Psalm 23:1-4, John 14:1-3, 2 Timothy 4:7-8, Revelation 21:4 and Matthew 5:4.

Anything for a teenager? Child Bereavement UK writes for 11 to 18 year olds.
