One person asked on Reddit's r/Christianity, "What does the Bible say about loneliness that just won’t go away?" Another Reddit user wrote on r/Catholicism, "I feel alone in the Church as a single guy."
The short answer is that the Bible records people saying they are alone, often as prayer, and keeps their words. A psalmist becomes "like a sparrow that is alone on the housetop" (Psalm 102:7). David, in a cave, says "No one cares for my soul" (Psalm 142:4). Elijah says "I, even I only, am left" (1 Kings 19:10). Paul writes "At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me" (2 Timothy 4:16). Jesus, in Gethsemane, finds his friends asleep three times (Mark 14:32-42). Psalm 88 ends, "You have put lover and friend far from me, and my friends into darkness." Bible verses for loneliness and sadness reads several of these closely.
If you only have a minute
Words to pray tonight
Psalm 25:16-17, "Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted."
Two kinds of alone
Sorrow among friends who fell asleep, and solitude Jesus chose for prayer.
If you are single
The traditions hold marriage and the unmarried life as goods, and none says which is yours.
Words to pray tonight: Psalm 25:16-17
The passage this site offers for loneliness is two verses from a psalm of David, in the World English Bible:
Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses.
They give you words in your own voice, asking God to turn toward the one praying. The trouble is not resolved in these lines; the psalm keeps asking. You can pray them as they stand, once, slowly. A question to sit with afterwards: if you could ask for one thing to be noticed today, what would it be?

Two verses are short enough to pray before the kettle boils.
The rest of Psalm 25
The psalm opens "To you, Yahweh, do I lift up my soul." Just before the lines above, verse 14 says "The friendship of Yahweh is with those who fear him," and verse 15, "My eyes are ever on Yahweh, for he will pluck my feet out of the net." Friendship is named before desolation.
Verse 18 turns to forgiveness: "Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins." The site's passage, Psalm 25:16-17, stops at verse 17, so the two verses stand as a prayer on their own without tying loneliness to sin, though you are welcome to read on.
Elijah in the cave
In 1 Kings 19, after Mount Carmel, Elijah has fled from Jezebel and is in a cave, afraid for his life. He is asked, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He answers, "I have been very jealous for Yahweh... I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."
Yahweh passes by in a wind that breaks rocks, an earthquake and a fire, and is in none of them. "After the fire, there was a still small voice." In verses 15 to 18 Elijah is sent back on the road with work: to anoint two kings, and Elisha as the prophet after him. He is also told, "Yet I reserved seven thousand in Israel, all the knees of which have not bowed to Baal." He had not counted them. It is Elijah's story, and what you draw from it is yours.
Paul asks for company
In 2 Timothy 4:9-18, writing from prison before a legal defense, Paul tells Timothy, "Be diligent to come to me soon." He names who has gone, "Demas left me," and says "Only Luke is with me." Then: "At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me. May it not be held against them. But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me." Wanting people is written into the letter beside his trust in God, and he apologizes for neither.
Two kinds of being alone
In Gethsemane, Jesus tells Peter, James and John, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch." Three times he finds them sleeping. On the cross, in Matthew 27:46, he cries the opening of Psalm 22, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Elsewhere he chooses to be alone. In Mark 1:35, "while it was still dark," he went "into a deserted place, and prayed there." Luke 5:16 says "he withdrew himself into the desert, and prayed," and after sending the crowd away in Mark 6:47, "he was alone on the land." Hastings' Bible dictionary says "Our Lord sought solitude in order to obtain spiritual help for specially important work." The first is sorrow among people who could not stay awake; the second is a withdrawal he chose. You may know one, or both.

Being alone and being lonely are not always the same.
What loneliness is
WHO calls loneliness "a subjective, distressing feeling that arises when there is a gap between the social connections one has and those one wants or needs," and separates it from social isolation, "the objective state of having too few roles, relationships, and interactions with others." That is how a person can be lonely in a full house.
WHO reports that "1 in 6 people worldwide is affected by loneliness," drawing on 2023 data. The ONS found 25 percent of adults in Great Britain felt lonely often, always or some of the time (7 percent often or always, 18 percent some of the time) in January to February 2025. If you are married and lonely, Bible verses for loneliness in marriage is written for you.
Does loneliness mean weak faith?
In threads on Reddit's r/Christianity (one, another), people report being told "God is all you need" and "Anyone who knows God won’t feel lonely because He’s always with them."
GotQuestions, an evangelical publisher, says "Being alone and being lonely are two different things" and "for the Christian the cure is always the same, the comforting fellowship of Christ." Psalm 88, a prayer in the Bible, ends in darkness with friends far away. In Psalm 25 David calls himself "desolate and afflicted," and Matthew Henry reads the psalm's close as "dependence upon God, and desire toward him." They sit side by side, and the judgment is yours.
Hebrews 13:5, "I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you," is often sent here. Its sentence begins "Be free from the love of money," just after a verse about honoring marriage. See if you have been told God should be enough.
If you are single
One man wrote on Reddit's r/TrueChristian, "Genesis 2:18 is a verse I absolutely dread hearing :/" The verse reads, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him," and the chapter goes on to the making of the woman. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America renders lebad as "isolated, separated" and ezer as "help, assistance." The NET Bible note says "Being alone prevents the man from fulfilling the design of creation and therefore is not good." The marriage page above reads the verse in its setting.
Paul, in 1 Corinthians 7, writes that "each man has his own gift from God, one of this kind, and another of that kind," and wants readers "free from cares." The Catechism says "both the sacrament of Matrimony and virginity for the Kingdom of God come from the Lord himself" (1618). The Orthodox Church in America says, quoting Paul, that those who do not marry "will do better," and Calvin says Paul does not "bind" everyone to celibacy, distinguishing by gift. Each holds both lives as goods, and none tells a particular reader whether they will marry.
Three verses people send
Psalm 68:6, "God sets the lonely in families," sits in a hymn calling God "A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows," about what God is like among his people. The site's Loneliness record set it aside as a first passage because, read as a personal promise, it forecasts a change you may not see. Ecclesiastes 4:8 begins with "one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother" before "Two are better than one"; it is about work and mutual help. Matthew 28:20, "Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age," is spoken to the disciples as they are sent to teach.
When church is the loneliest room
One person wrote on Reddit's r/TrueChristian, "The church has to do a better job with single people." The passages suggest one small step. Paul asked Timothy by name to come. You might tell one person, or a priest or minister, that you are lonely. Nothing is promised about what comes of it.

One message to one person.
Loneliness and low mood
Mind says "having a mental health problem can increase feelings of loneliness," naming depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and sleep problems, and WHO links loneliness with "increased depression and anxiety." If it has settled into something heavier, tell a doctor. If it came after a death, what the Bible says about grief may fit better.
Questions people ask
How common is loneliness that lasts? The Health Survey for England 2024 reports chronic loneliness at 5 to 7 percent of adults aged 35 and over in England, varying by age.
How does the King James Version word Psalm 25:16? "Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted." The sense matches the World English Bible used here.
