People mean different things when they say they are tired. One post on Reddit's r/Christianity says only "Am tired", and the same writer adds, "I keep on praying since 2019 was my divorce year and till today's date." Another Reddit user, asking for help in prayer, wrote "my soul is quite loaded with chores and confusion." For some it is a body short of sleep after weeks with a new baby or a run of night shifts. For others it is a mind worn thin by caring for a parent or by a job that takes everything, or a faith that has gone quiet, where praying feels like talking to a wall. You may be carrying more than one of these, and you do not need to sort them before you read on.

If you only have a minute
Read tonight
Psalm 143:3-4, a prayer that says "my spirit is overwhelmed within me."
One small thing
Read verse 4 once, slowly, and stay with the question "What has been taking everything you have?"
Jesus was tired too
John 4:6 has him sit down by a well, worn out from walking.
When to see a doctor
The NHS says see a GP if you have been tired for a few weeks and do not know why.

Psalm 143:3-4, words for the state
The passage Bible Nudge offers for emotional exhaustion is Psalm 143:3-4:
For the enemy pursues my soul. He has struck my life down to the ground. He has made me live in dark places, as those who have been long dead. Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate.
Psalm 143 is a prayer written under pursuit and pressure. These two verses describe what that pressure has done to the speaker, and the psalm goes on asking in verses 5 to 7, still praying from inside it. It gives you words for the state, to pray for as long as the feeling lasts. Bible verses for mental exhaustion reads the psalm closely and explains why it was chosen.
Something small to do with it tonight
Read verse 4 once, slowly: "Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate." Then stay for a moment with one question: what has been taking everything you have? You do not have to answer it out loud or write anything down.
If you want one more line, verse 6 can be prayed as it stands: "I spread out my hands to you. My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land." It asks for nothing to be fixed. The whole thing takes about a minute, and you can leave it there.

One verse, read once, is enough for tonight.
Jesus tired, and asleep
If you worry that being this tired says something about you, the Gospels, the four accounts of Jesus' life, record him tired on an ordinary day. In John 4, he comes to Sychar in Samaria, where Jacob's well was. The text says he was tired from walking, so he "sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour." When a Samaritan woman came to draw water he asked her, "Give me a drink."
In Mark 4, it is evening. Leaving the crowd behind, his disciples take him across the lake "even as he was, in the boat." A storm fills the boat with water, and "He himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion." Neither text comments on it. The tiredness is simply there, part of the day.
Elijah under the juniper tree
Elijah's story is the one people reach for, and what the Bible says about burnout tells it in full. In 1 Kings 19, after Jezebel threatens his life, Elijah runs to Beersheba, walks a day into the wilderness and sits under a juniper tree. There he says, "It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers." Then he lies down and sleeps. An angel touches him and says "Arise and eat!" He finds a cake baked on the coals and a jar of water, and "He ate and drank, and lay down again." Only after a second meal, and a second touch, does he go on.
The order is what helps a tired body: sleep, food, more sleep, more food, and only then the road.

If you fear tiredness is a failure of faith
Christian writers read Elijah's prayer differently. Enduring Word, an evangelical commentary, says God met him "not with rebuke, but with physical rest, food, permission to voice his pain." Matthew Henry, from the Reformed tradition, is harder on the prayer itself and calls Elijah's wish to die "the passionate wish of his corruption." The Catholic Catechism (paragraph 2730) speaks of discouragement and "failure to pray" as part of the battle of prayer. The two commentators differ on how to judge what Elijah asked for, and neither makes the tiredness itself a verdict on him; the Catechism treats discouragement as something believers meet in prayer. The judgment between them is yours.
Two shorter passages from inside the tiredness
In Mark 6:30-32, the apostles come back to Jesus to report all they have done and taught. He says, "You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile," and Mark explains why: "there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat." If you are caring for someone or up with a baby, that detail about no time to eat may be the one that lands.
In Jeremiah 45, Baruch, who wrote down Jeremiah's words in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim, says, "I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest." The answer he receives leaves the upheaval in the land in place and promises him one thing: "I will let you escape with your life wherever you go."

Sleep and food came first in Elijah's story.
When the tiredness is in the body
The NHS gives a plain line on when to see a doctor: "See a GP if: you've been feeling tired for a few weeks and you're not sure why; your tiredness affects your daily life; [or] you feel tired and have other symptoms, such as weight loss or mood changes." A GP is a family doctor.
If you care for someone, Carers UK says caring "can be very tiring, putting a lot of demands on your physical and emotional energy." Its State of Caring 2025 report found that 65% of the carers who responded found it hard to get a good night's sleep because of their caring role.
With a new baby, the NHS says "Looking after a baby can be really tiring, especially in the first few months after the birth." The same page says that feeling tired all the time "could be signs of postnatal depression," so it is worth mentioning to your doctor or health visitor.
For shift workers, CDC/NIOSH reports that in its 2016 nationally representative study, 61.8% of night-shift workers reported short sleep, against 35.9% of daytime workers. That is a finding about surveyed US workers.
When tiredness shades into burnout or depression
NHS Every Mind Matters says long-term or severe stress "can lead to feeling physical, mental and emotional exhaustion, often called 'burnout'", and its page on work stress says burnout "may also increase your risk of anxiety and depression." Mind lists "feeling tired all the time" among the possible experiences of depression, as one sign among several. These describe; they do not diagnose. If your tiredness comes from the job, Bible verses for work burnout is written for that.

Some tiredness comes home from work with you.
The verses people often send
Matthew 11:28-30, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest," is Jesus speaking to the crowds in Galilee. It is the passage this site offers for anxiety, read closely in Bible verses for anxiety and overthinking.
Isaiah 40:28-31 answers Jacob and Israel, who say in verse 27, "My way is hidden from Yahweh." It promises that "those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength." The emotional exhaustion record set it aside because it promises a renewed strength you may not yet be anywhere near.
1 Peter 5:7, "casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you," comes near the end of a letter, straight after the words "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time."
Questions people ask
Is it wrong to feel tired of praying? None of the passages here treats it that way. Psalm 143 keeps asking while the speaker says his spirit fails, and Baruch's complaint is answered rather than rebuked.
Is feeling tired all the time a sign of depression? It can be one sign among several, and it can also come from sleep loss, caring or a medical condition. The NHS says to see a GP when it lasts a few weeks without a clear reason.
