Some people read this in a wet house, some from a shelter, and some from another country while the news shows a parent's street. The National Weather Service described an early-season nor'easter bringing coastal flooding to New York City, Long Island and New Jersey on September 26 and 27, 2026, and the Associated Press reported about 100,000 customers without power at one point (CBS News New York). In Bangkok, all 50 districts were declared flood disaster areas on September 26, with about 4,200 people in about 200 shelters (AP, Al Jazeera, flood dashboard). In Uttar Pradesh, India, the Times of India reported on September 27 a Relief Commissioner situation report of 56 deaths, and Hindustan Times a higher toll; every figure was still changing.

First steps, in the words of the agencies that publish them
For wiring, gas, structure or mold, ask the agency named below, your utility or a qualified electrician.
FEMA says, "Do not return home until authorities have declared it safe," and to "take pictures of the damage before you clean." The Red Cross says, "Many injuries happen during cleanup," and lists boots, gloves, eyewear and an N95 respirator. The CDC says, "Never use a wet electrical device," and puts generators, charcoal grills and pressure washers outdoors at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents.
FEMA says to call the gas company from outside if a leak is suspected and to have a qualified electrician inspect electrical systems before power is restored. GOV.UK says, "Do not turn on gas or electricity if it has been turned off because of flooding," and Public Safety Canada and the NSW State Emergency Service give the same direction. The Red Cross and CDC each list what to throw away after floodwater, among them mattresses, carpeting, stuffed animals and baby toys.
The EPA says, "You should assume you have mold growth if you were not able to dry your flooded home, including furniture and other belongings, within 24-48 hours," and the Red Cross gives the same 24 to 48 hours. The EPA adds that cleanup may be too difficult or dangerous for a household and that a qualified remediation or restoration professional may be needed.

Free help to ask for, by country
- United States. FEMA individual assistance generally requires living in a presidentially declared disaster area, and USA.gov lists application at DisasterAssistance.gov or on 1-800-621-3362; it also names FEMA Disaster Legal Services as free legal help for qualifying low-income people. The National Flood Insurance Program says, "Start a claim with your insurance provider," and its claims checklist says to submit required documentation within 60 days of the flood or the period the adjuster or provider specifies. FEMA asks people to photograph damage inside and outside and keep receipts.
- United States and Canada. United Way 211 says, "Simply call 211 from a cell phone or landline to speak with a live, highly trained service professional." In Canada, 211.ca lists services by province and territory.
- United Kingdom. Ask your local council which office handles flood recovery, and use the Environment Agency's flood information service.
- Australia. Ask your state or territory emergency service and your local recovery authority what is open to you.
- Thailand. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration flood dashboard and your district office.
- India. The Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner portal, and the 1077 disaster helpline with district emergency control rooms.
Romans 15:13, a prayer for the long recovery
The passage this site offers for hope is Romans 15:13, a prayer:
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
The King James wording:
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Paul, writing to Christians in Rome, has just called stronger believers to bear with the weak and welcome one another. Verse 13 is the prayer that closes that call. It gives you a prayer to pray as it stands, asking God to fill a person with hope, joy and peace, for the week when the floor is bare and nothing is back. Hope here is asked for and given, never something you have to produce.
Matthew Henry, in the Reformed tradition, calls God "the foundation on which our hope is built." The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1817, defines hope as "placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit."
Tonight, read verse 13 aloud once, slowly, as a prayer for the household, and hold this question: "Where do you most need hope to be given rather than generated?" Read Romans 15:13 with the verses around it any time.
What the weeks after are like
The National Center for PTSD says that after disasters "almost everyone has reactions early," and that most lessen over the first few weeks. On Reddit, in r/Edmonton, August 31, 2026, one person wrote about the wait, "it took 3 months before anything really moved."
What lands badly, and what to say instead
On Reddit, in r/mtg, February 17, 2021, somebody who had lost part of a collection in flooding wrote, "I wish man, we are super broke, but it’s only stuff." Lines like that, and "God is in control" or "at least you are alive," shrink a loss that has a real shape: the kitchen, the photographs, the children's room.
The site's own wording for something better: "I'm so sorry. Tell me what you're missing most, and I'll help you look for it." "Can I come Saturday and carry things out with you, and bring lunch?" "You do not have to decide about anything today." Nobody can promise the house will be back to normal soon, so a friend helps most by offering a specific day and job: sit with the paperwork, watch the children, carry out the ruined things.
What can be saved
The Library of Congress says freezing wet collections "halts the progress of the water damage, mold growth, and allows you to wait until you have the resources to dry materials properly." NCTSN says families can freeze soaked photographs and documents until they have the time and emotional strength to deal with them. So, the photographs can wait in the freezer, and so can the grief.

Two ideas from this site: one person in the household holds the paperwork in a single folder, and you say yes to the first person who offers a specific job.
More words for the water and the rebuilding
In Psalm 69:1-3 the psalmist, headed as David, cries "Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck!" It gives water language said aloud to God. Isaiah 43:2 holds words of God to Israel, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you," a sentence about presence while passing through. Bible verses for storms reads Psalm 107 and Acts 27, and Bible verses for hope in hard times is for the weeks when hope feels far off.
For a church member, pastor or friend who wants to help
A practical route for a local church is to ask the local emergency management office or a recognized relief group what is needed before showing up. The Church of England's prayer for people affected by flooding reads: "God of compassion, you hear the cries of all who are in trouble or distress; accept our prayers for those whose lives are affected by storms and flooding: strengthen them in their hour of need, grant them perseverance and courage to face the future and be to them a firm foundation on which to build their lives; this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." You could pray Romans 15:13 for the household by name; a prayer for families of the missing after a disaster is for a family still waiting for somebody.
Where to go next
These lines are for any night that feels too heavy, whatever led to it:
- United States: call or text 988; the Crisis Text Line, "Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a live volunteer Crisis Counselor"; the SAMHSA Disaster Distress Helpline, call or text 1-800-985-5990.
- Canada: call or text 9-8-8.
- United Kingdom and Ireland: Samaritans on 116 123.
- Australia: Lifeline on 13 11 14.
- Thailand: the Department of Mental Health hotline, 1323.
- India: Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 1800-89-14416, and 112 for emergencies.
- Anywhere else: Find A Helpline.
If a person says they have no hope left or cannot go on, the crisis line comes first, before any verse. One next step for tonight: photograph what you can, call one official route for your country, and read Romans 15:13 once aloud as a prayer.
Bible Nudge can take a line about what you are carrying, in your own words, and come back with one passage and what surrounds it. Find a passage.
