Read the passage

Psalm 36:5-6

World English Bible

Your loving kindness, Yahweh, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God. Your judgments are like a great deep. Yahweh, you preserve man and animal.

In the King James Version

Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast.

What was happening around this

The unnamed psalmist addresses Yahweh directly in vv. 5–6. Rebecca Poe Hays identifies a sharp turn at v. 5: vv. 1–4 portray the wicked, vv. 5–9 praise Yahweh’s character and actions, and vv. 10–12 become a petition and conclusion. Thus the praise stands in deliberate contrast to the preceding portrait of deceit and planned evil, not as an unframed statement.

The verses on either side

Psalm 36, verses either side, World English Bible

  1. For he flatters himself in his own eyes, too much to detect and hate his sin.
  2. The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.
  3. He plots iniquity on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He doesn’t abhor evil.
  4. Your loving kindness, Yahweh, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
  5. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God. Your judgments are like a great deep. Yahweh, you preserve man and animal.
  6. How precious is your loving kindness, God! The children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
  7. They shall be abundantly satisfied with the abundance of your house. You will make them drink of the river of your pleasures.
  8. For with you is the spring of life. In your light shall we see light.
