Read the passage
Matthew 10:29-31
“Aren’t two sparrows sold for an assarion coin? Not one of them falls on the ground apart from your Father’s will, but the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.
In the King James Version
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
What was happening around this
Jesus speaks to the Twelve, whom he has commissioned in Matthew 10:1–15, in instructions that anticipate opposition. Mark G. Vitalis Hoffman notes that “do not fear” in 10:24–31 sits amid explicit threats of violence and death, while vv. 32–39 turn to confessing or denying Jesus and conflict generated by the mission. The sparrow saying is therefore between v. 28’s warning about those who kill the body and vv. 32–34’s consequences and conflict.
