Somewhere to start

# Somewhere to start in the Bible when you're carrying something.

Tell us in a sentence what is going on, and you get one passage from the Bible to start with: the words themselves, the part of the story they sit inside, and a short note on why they may fit. Not a list of verses. One place to begin. You can pick from a list instead if you would rather not type anything.

What you actually get

Type a sentence. This comes back.

“my dad died three weeks ago”

> Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

Psalm 34:18 · World English Bible

> The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:18 · King James Version

Psalm 34 is a song of praise formed in hardship. It holds suffering and God’s attentive presence together.

This verse does not hurry grief. It names God as near to people whose hearts feel broken.

What would it mean to let nearness, rather than explanation, be enough today?

The verses on either side are on the passage's own page, and you can ask again in different words as many times as you like.

Choose the way that feels right for you.

## Say it in your words

A few words are enough. Nothing is kept.

Why the part around it matters

Most verses were written to somebody, in the middle of something, and knowing what that was changes how the words land.

[Matthew 11:28](https://biblenudge.com/context/matthew-11-28-30) is an invitation offered to people already worn out from carrying things, and it runs on into a description of what learning from Jesus is like. [Psalm 34:18](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-34-18) sits inside a song of praise put together in hardship rather than in a calm moment. [Exodus 18](https://biblenudge.com/context/exodus-18-17-18) is somebody watching Moses work himself into the ground for a day and telling him the arrangement is what is wrong, not him. [Psalm 13](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-13-1-2) asks how long, four times, and does not answer itself.

So, you get the whole paragraph.

One of the thirteen, as an example.

If you are not sure this is for you

You will not be asked what you believe.

Some people arrive here as regular churchgoers who have simply gone blank on where to look. Some have not opened a Bible in twenty years and are not sure why they are opening one tonight. Some are not sure what they believe at all. The passage and the notes read the same for all of them.

If a word like Scripture is unfamiliar, it just means the writings in the Bible. Where a term like that is used here, there is a plain one beside it.

Thirteen experiences, each with a passage somebody chose for it deliberately and wrote up. You do not have to work out which one you are. Describe what happened in your own words and it will find the closest.

What you get

One passage. Who was saying it, who they were saying it to, and what was happening in the room.

At three days into a loss, or the third night awake, you can read that in a minute and you do not have to choose. If it does not fit, say it differently and ask again. And if what you describe does not sit close to anything here, you will be told so instead of handed something that half fits.

Come back tomorrow or never. Anything you keep stays in your own browser, for you to clear whenever you want.

A place to begin, for whatever you are carrying today.

If a passage is not enough

## Sometimes what helps is a longer book.

Some pages will point you to a book by somebody who has spent their life on this, when a passage is not the thing that helps. The passages, the verses around them and the notes stay free.

If what you are carrying is heavier than a page can hold, this is not the place. Nobody is reading what you type here.
