Read the passage

# Romans 8:28

World English Bible

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

In the King James Version

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

## What was happening around this

Paul addresses believers in Rome, inside an argument about suffering, hope, the Spirit and God’s purpose.

The verses on either side

Romans 8:25-31, World English Bible

1. But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.
2. In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.
3. He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.
4. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.
5. For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
6. Whom he predestined, those he also called. Whom he called, those he also justified. Whom he justified, those he also glorified.
7. What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

One passage that does not try to account for anything, the two verses most often brought to bereaved parents, and where the angel phrase came from.

- [Bible verses for the loss of a parent](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-the-loss-of-a-parent)

One passage for the death of a mother or father, the part of the psalm it belongs to, why Romans 8:28 lands badly this early, and what the bereaved say.

- [What not to say to someone grieving](https://biblenudge.com/blog/what-not-to-say-to-someone-grieving)

The phrases bereaved people say landed worst, with something to send instead beside each one, and why the sentences that explain a death are the hardest.
