Read the passage

# Romans 15:13

World English Bible

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

## What surrounds this passage

Paul closes a call to patient, welcoming community with a prayer that hope, joy, and peace would overflow.

The verses on either side

Romans 15:10-16, World English Bible

1. Again he says, “Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”
2. Again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! Let all the peoples praise him.”
3. Again, Isaiah says, “There will be the root of Jesse, he who arises to rule over the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles will hope.”
4. Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
5. I myself am also persuaded about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish others.
6. But I write the more boldly to you in part, as reminding you, because of the grace that was given to me by God,
7. that I should be a servant of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of the Good News of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be made acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

A question to sit with

Where do you most need hope to be given rather than generated?

Why this one, and not these

3 passages were considered for this and turned down, each for a reason written at the time.

Jeremiah 29:11

The most quoted and most misapplied verse available here. It is addressed to a nation in exile about a return after seventy years, and offered as a personal guarantee of a good outcome it makes a promise on God’s behalf that nobody can keep for a particular reader.

Romans 8:28

It asks the reader to believe the present difficulty is working toward good. That is a claim about their circumstances that this product is not in a position to make.

Proverbs 13:12

"Hope deferred makes the heart sick" describes the condition accurately and does nothing further with it. It fits a waiting record better than a hope one.
