Read the passage

# Psalm 13:1-2

World English Bible

How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me?

In the King James Version

How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

King James Version (Public Domain)

## What surrounds this passage

Psalm 13 is a short prayer of complaint. It opens with repeated questions about delay and about God seeming hidden, and turns toward trust only later.

The verses on either side

Psalm 13:1-5, World English Bible

1. How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
2. How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me?
3.  Behold, and answer me, Yahweh, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death;
4. Lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed against him”; Lest my adversaries rejoice when I fall.
5. But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation.

A question to sit with

What have you been waiting for longer than you expected?

Why this one, and not these

3 passages were considered for this and turned down, each for a reason written at the time.

Psalm 27:14

It instructs the reader to wait. Given to somebody who is already waiting, and has been for a long time, it is an instruction they are already obeying.

Habakkuk 2:3

"It will not delay" is a promise about timing. Nobody can make that promise on God’s behalf to a particular reader about a particular thing.

Isaiah 40:31

It promises renewed strength to those who wait, which answers a different question from the one being asked.
