Read the passage

# Matthew 11:28-30

World English Bible

28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

In the King James Version

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

King James Version (Public Domain)

## What surrounds this passage

In Matthew 11, Jesus speaks to people carrying heavy burdens and invites them to come to him and learn from him. The invitation does not deny difficulty; it names Jesus as gentle and humble and continues into a way of life with him.

The verses on either side

Matthew 11:25-30, World English Bible

1. At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.
2. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.
3. All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.
4. “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
5. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
6. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

A question to sit with

What burden are you trying to carry alone?

Why this one, and not these

3 passages were considered for this and turned down, each for a reason written at the time.

Psalm 23

It is a meaningful passage about God's care, but its wider imagery would require more contextual explanation than this first bounded anxiety record provides.

Philippians 4:4-9

It speaks directly to anxiety, but its exhortational language can be heard as pressure when presented without fuller pastoral context. It remains a candidate for a separately reviewed record.

Isaiah 40:31

Its emphasis is better suited to perseverance and renewed strength than to an immediate emotional burden. It may fit a separately reviewed weariness record.
