![Is Zeke a Biblical Name? Ezekiel, God Strengthens, the Valley of Dry Bones, and Romans 15:13 for Hope](https://biblenudge.com/blog/zeke-name-meaning-bible/featured.jpg)

Zeke comes from a Bible name. It is a short form of Ezekiel, Hebrew Yechezqel, which means "God will strengthen" in most name dictionaries ([Behind the Name, Zeke](https://www.behindthename.com/name/zeke); [Behind the Name, Ezekiel](https://www.behindthename.com/name/ezekiel)). Ezekiel is the Bible person, Ezequiel in Spanish. The [National Hurricane Center's 2026 Eastern Pacific guide](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pdf/aboutnames_pronounce_epac.pdf) gives Zeke as "zeek," and Zeke is the last name on the [published 2026 Eastern Pacific list of storm names](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml).

## If you only have a minute

### The name

Zeke is short for Ezekiel, "God will strengthen."

### The prophet

A priest among the exiles by the river Chebar.

### The valley

Ezekiel 37, where a people says "our hope is lost."

### For hope

[Romans 15:13](https://biblenudge.com/context/romans-15-13), a prayer that hope would be given.

### The film line

Ezekiel 25:17 is a real verse, and the speech around it is the film's own.

## What the name means, and where it sits

[Strong's H3168](https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/h3168/kjv/wlc/0-1/) builds Yechezqel from *chazaq*, "to strengthen" (H2388), and *El*, "God" (H410), and the [Jewish Encyclopedia](https://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/5931-ezekiel) explains it through "God" and "strength." Some older name discussions give "God hardens," because the root can also mean firm or hard. Is Ezekiel a powerful name? Many people hear strength in it, and its meaning, "God will strengthen," supports that. Is Zeke rare? Zeke is usually a nickname for Ezekiel, and the Social Security Administration's [baby name data](https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/) shows how common each is by year. Whether it suits a boy is for each family to decide; it carries a Hebrew meaning, a prophet and a short friendly sound.

The book names him at Ezekiel 1:3 ("Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi") and 24:24. First Chronicles 24:16 has a priest called Jehezekel in the KJV, a different person. The Reina-Valera 1909 prints Ezequiel for the prophet and Hezeciel in Chronicles ([Ezequiel 1:3](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezequiel%201%3A3&version=RVR1909), [Ezequiel 37:1-14](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezequiel%2037%3A1-14&version=RVR1909), [1 Crónicas 24:16](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Cr%C3%B3nicas%2024%3A16&version=RVR1909)). English speakers mostly say Ezekiel ih-ZEE-kee-uhl, and Ezequiel is about eh-seh-KYEL.

## Who Ezekiel was

He is a priest among the captives by the river Chebar, in the land of the Chaldeans, in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity: "the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God" ([Ezekiel 1:1-3](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel%201%3A1-3&version=WEB)). Many scholars date the first deportation to 597 BCE and Jerusalem's fall to 586 BCE, and describe the book in three movements: judgment on Judah and Jerusalem, judgment on foreign nations, and visions of restoration, with debate over how much was shaped later ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Ezekiel)). His call includes the address "Son of man," a scroll he eats, and seven days sitting among the exiles, "overwhelmed" (3:15). At 3:17 he becomes "a watchman to the house of Israel." [Bible verses for first responders](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-first-responders) uses the watchman, and the priestly start, the exile and the call give it its setting.

## The valley of dry bones

The prophet is set down in a valley "full of bones," very dry ([Ezekiel 37](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel%2037&version=WEB)):

> He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I answered, “Lord Yahweh, you know.”

He prophesies, the bones come together, sinew, flesh and skin cover them, and breath enters them. Then the vision explains itself: "these bones are the whole house of Israel," who say, "Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost. We are completely cut off." Verses 15 to 28 go on with two sticks, for Judah and for Joseph, made one.

The readings differ. Sanhedrin 92b ([Sefaria](https://www.sefaria.org/Sanhedrin.92b?lang=en)) records a Jewish debate over who the revived dead were and whether the event was literal, symbolic or a vision. Christian traditions often read it as the resurrection of the dead and the life-giving Spirit. The vision is about a people in exile. It gives you words for the very sentence "our hope is lost," already in the Bible, and a question, "can these bones live?", that the prophet hands back to God.

## Romans 15:13, hope received

Bible Nudge's passage for hope sits beside the valley. [Romans 15:13](https://biblenudge.com/context/romans-15-13) reads:

> Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Paul closes a call to a patient, welcoming community with a prayer that hope, joy and peace would overflow (Romans 15:10-16). In Ezekiel a people says its hope is lost; in Romans Paul prays that hope would be given. Both leave hope as something a person can receive without having to produce it. Where do you most need hope to be given rather than generated? [Bible verses for hope in hard times](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-hope-in-hard-times) reads this verse at length.

## Strange acts, and a hard evening

God tells Ezekiel to lay a tile with Jerusalem drawn on it, to lie on one side and then the other, to shave his hair and beard and divide it, and to pack baggage and dig through a wall at evening ([Ezekiel 4](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel%204&version=WEB), [5](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel%205&version=WEB) and [12](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel%2012&version=WEB)). Rashi and Radak read these as demonstrations for the exiles ([Sefaria](https://www.sefaria.org/Ezekiel)), [Matthew Henry](https://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/ezekiel/4.html) as announcements of Jerusalem's judgment, and a 2022 article calls them "performative sign-acts" that re-enact the trauma of Jerusalem's defeat ([Ezekiel and the Construction of Cultural Trauma](https://doi.org/10.1515/opth-2022-0221)).

In [Ezekiel 24](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel%2024%3A15-27&version=WEB), he is told the desire of his eyes will be taken "with a stroke" and not to mourn aloud: "at evening my wife died." The chapter ends with his mouth opened. [Who in the Bible grieved](https://biblenudge.com/blog/who-in-the-bible-grieved) reads the scene as "told to be quiet"; in Ezekiel itself it becomes a sign to the exiles about the loss of the sanctuary.

## The verse from the film

Ezekiel 25 is an oracle against the Philistines about revenge. Verse 17 ends in the WEB, "I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes. Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I lay my vengeance on them," and in the KJV, "they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them" ([Ezekiel 25](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel%2025%3A1-17&version=KJV)). The 1994 film *Pulp Fiction* ([screenplay](https://www.imsdb.com/scripts/Pulp-Fiction.html)) has a character recite a speech that ends close to it, "when I lay my vengeance upon thee." The speech before that, which opens "The path of the righteous man," belongs to the film.

Plenty of people land here from the film. On Reddit's r/AskAChristian, posted 2023-02-25, someone asked ["What exactly does Ezekiel 25:17 mean?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAChristian/comments/118fad9) On Reddit's r/Tarantino, posted 2018-07-19, someone wrote ["Am i the only one who memorized the ezekiel monolgue both in english and italian."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Tarantino/comments/chlwov) "You only know that from the movie" lands badly; "That line gets a lot of people curious; want to see where it sits in the book?" lands better.

## How the traditions read him

Chagigah 13a ([Sefaria](https://www.sefaria.org/Chagigah.13a?with=Rashi)) says, "All that Ezekiel saw, the prophet Isaiah saw as well, but the latter did not find it necessary to describe his vision in such detail," and Maimonides reads the chariot vision through philosophical and symbolic categories ([Guide for the Perplexed](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/73522)). Many synagogues read Ezekiel 1:1-28 on the first day of Shavuot. Christian traditions receive Ezekiel among the prophets and read him in many ways.

## A storm name is a label

Storm names are chosen years ahead from World Meteorological Organization lists. The National Hurricane Center says the six lists are recycled every six years, "the 2026 list will be used again in 2032" ([NHC](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml)), and the [WMO](https://wmo.int/content/tropical-cyclone-naming/eastern-north-pacific-names) publishes the Eastern Pacific list. A name on the list is a label that helps people tell storms apart in warnings, chosen long before any storm forms, and wondering about it is an ordinary thing to do. Official storm information is always at the National Hurricane Center in [English](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) and [Spanish](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/MIATWOSEP.shtml), and from Mexico's [Servicio Meteorológico Nacional](https://smn.conagua.gob.mx/).
