Leah, in Hebrew *Le'ah*, is most often explained as "weary," and scholars offer more than one meaning. In Spanish she is Lea or Lía, and in Genesis she is Jacob's first wife and the mother of six of his sons. You may have heard the name on the television or radio, or carried it all your life without knowing the story. Here is what it means, who she was, and a psalm for anyone who has felt like second choice.

## If you only have a minute

### What it means

Traditionally "weary"; other proposals exist.

### Her story

Genesis 29 to 35, and her burial in Genesis 49:31.

### A psalm to keep

[Psalm 25:16-17](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-25-16-17), plain words for feeling unchosen.

## What the name Leah means

Strong's H3812 gives "weary," from the verb *la'ah*, "to be weary" ([Strong's H3812](https://thehistoricfaith.com/strongs/h3812)), and Brown-Driver-Briggs reads "Leah = 'weary'" ([BDB entry](https://lemma.gebible.app/w/H3812)). A second line of thought compares an Akkadian background, often given as "mistress" or "cow," and the [NIV Exhaustive Concordance Dictionary](https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/niv-exhaustive-concordance-dictionary/H4207) lists a possible "wild cow." So, "weary" is the traditional gloss, while "unloved," "delicate" and "ruler" are interpretive or popular associations. [Abarim Publications](https://www.abarim-publications.com/Meaning/Leah.html), an etymology site for general readers, adds Akkadian and animal-name connections, and the devotional [Messianic Bible](https://www.messianicbible.com/) gives "weary."

"What is another name for Leah?" In Greek she is *Leia*, in Latin *Lia*, in Spanish *Lea* or *Lía*, in French *Léa*, and in English Leah, Lea, Lia and Leia. The National Hurricane Center's [2026 Atlantic pronunciation guide](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pdf/aboutnames_pronounce_atlc.pdf) gives LEE-ah, and the Hebrew is often rendered LAY-ah.

## What was wrong with Leah's eyes?

Genesis 29:17 is the verse people remember. The World English Bible reads:

> Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and attractive.

The Hebrew *rakkot* can mean soft, tender, delicate, weak or gentle, and translators choose differently. [Bible Gateway's side-by-side list](https://www.biblegateway.com/verse/en/Genesis%2029%3A17) shows "weak" in the NIV, ESV and NASB, "tender eyes" in the CSB, "no sparkle in Leah’s eyes" in the NLT, and "lovely" in the NRSV. [Rashi](https://www.sefaria.org/Rashi_on_Genesis.29.17) links her eyes to weeping, and [commentators from other traditions](https://biblehub.com/commentaries/genesis/29-17.htm) report the range without making Leah ugly or diseased. The verse describes her eyes in one word; the chapters after it describe a wife and a mother.

## Leah's story in Genesis 29: seen, heard, joined, praised

Genesis 29:30-31 says:

> He went in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years. Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

Leah names her first four sons in speeches. Reuben: "Because Yahweh has looked at my affliction; for now my husband will love me." Simeon: "Because Yahweh has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this son also." Levi: "Now this time will my husband be joined to me." Judah: "This time will I praise Yahweh." The names play on the Hebrew for seen, heard, joined and praise, and Jewish readings follow the speeches as Leah's changing relationship with God, with Judah's name the clearest turn toward praise.

"Hated" in verse 31 is "hated" in the WEB, KJV and ESV, "not loved" in the NIV, and "unloved" in the NRSV and NLT, as [Bible Gateway shows](https://www.biblegateway.com/verse/en/Genesis%2029%3A31). Matthew Henry and John Calvin read it as a comparison, Leah loved less than Rachel ([BibleHub](https://biblehub.com/commentaries/genesis/29-17.htm)). The posts on [feeling left out](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-feeling-left-out) and [a broken heart](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-a-broken-heart) read the same verses.

## A psalm for feeling unchosen

If you have felt like second choice, Psalm 25:16-17 is a prayer for exactly that loneliness. Just before it the speaker says, "My eyes are ever on Yahweh, for he will pluck my feet out of the net." Then:

> Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses.

It is a prayer of David asking God for attention, guidance and mercy, in which the speaker describes his own condition and asks God to look at him, and the psalm keeps asking. The Hebrew word behind "desolate" is *yachid*, with senses "only," "solitary" and "lonely" ([BDB](https://biblehub.com/hebrew/3173.htm)).

What it gives you is words in your own voice, the plain word desolate already in the Bible, and a request to be turned toward. Genesis 29:31 says Yahweh saw Leah, and in the psalm the speaker asks to be looked at. You can read [Psalm 25:16-17](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-25-16-17) with the verses around it, and [what the Bible says about loneliness](https://biblenudge.com/blog/what-does-the-bible-say-about-loneliness) and [who in the Bible was lonely](https://biblenudge.com/blog/who-in-the-bible-was-lonely) both read this prayer. To use it, read it aloud once, and hold one question: if you could ask for one thing to be noticed today, what would it be?

## The rest of Leah's story

She gives her servant Zilpah to Jacob, and Zilpah bears Gad and Asher. Leah and Rachel bargain over Reuben's mandrakes, and Leah bears Issachar, then Zebulun, saying, "Now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons." A daughter, Dinah, is named next ([Genesis 30](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/GEN.30.WEBUS)). In [Genesis 31](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/GEN.31.WEBUS) she and Rachel answer Jacob together, in [Genesis 33](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/GEN.33.WEBUS) she comes forward before Rachel, and [Genesis 35:23](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/GEN.35.WEBUS) lists her sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.

## How did Leah die, and where is she buried?

Genesis records where Leah was buried rather than how she died. In [Genesis 49:29-33](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/GEN.49.WEBUS) Jacob tells his sons, "There they buried Abraham and Sarah, his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah, his wife, and there I buried Leah," in the cave of Machpelah. [Genesis Rabbah on Sefaria](https://www.sefaria.org/Genesis_Rabbah.70.16) expands her story, in later Jewish tradition. The cave is traditionally identified with Hebron and called the Tomb or Cave of the Patriarchs, honored in Jewish, Christian and Muslim tradition ([Encyclopaedia Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/place/Cave-of-the-Patriarchs)).

## Who was Leah to God, and why do her sons matter?

The texts record Leah as the mother of six of Jacob's sons and of Dinah, and, through Judah and Levi, the ancestor of the royal line and the priestly line. Jacob says of Judah, "The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet" ([Genesis 49:8-12](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/GEN.49.WEBUS)). Levi's line leads to Moses and Aaron ([Exodus 6:16-20](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/EXO.6.WEBUS)), and [Matthew 1:1-3](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+1%3A1-3&version=KJV) and [Luke 3:33-34](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+3%3A33-34&version=KJV) trace a line through Judah. In [Ruth 4:11](https://www.bible.com/bible/206/RUT.4.WEBUS) the people at the gate say, "May Yahweh make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and like Leah, which both built the house of Israel."

Devotional writers often describe Leah as "seen by God," drawing on Genesis 29:31. The [Jewish Encyclopedia](https://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/9672-leah) treats her as a matriarch whose sons became tribes, [Matthew Henry](https://biblehub.com/commentaries/genesis/29-17.htm) reads her story as part of providence, and [GotQuestions](https://www.gotquestions.org/Leah-in-the-Bible.html) offers the devotional view of a woman seen by God though overlooked by people.

## Lea in the Bible, for Spanish readers

*¿Qué significa Lea en la Biblia?* Popular Spanish pages say *cansada* or *fatigada*, from the traditional "weary," and some add *vaca salvaje* or *la que gobierna*, from the competing proposals. *¿Qué dice la Biblia sobre Lea?* The references are Génesis 29:16-35, 30:9-21, 31:4-16, 33:1-7, 35:23-26 and 49:31, and Rut 4:11, and the Reina-Valera 1909 spells her Lea. The Social Security Administration's [baby name data](https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/) and Spain's [INE name search](https://www.ine.es/widgets/nombApell/nombApell.shtml) show how common Leah, Lea and Lía are.

## If you are the one who feels unchosen

Some things said kindly land hard on someone who feels second choice. Gentler lines that help:

- Instead of "God is all you need," try "I'd like to be one of the people you can lean on."
- Instead of "at least someone loves you," try "That sounds lonely. What is it like?"
- Instead of "be content," try "I'm not going to ask you to feel any other way."
- Instead of "God has someone better," try "I see you."

Wanting people around you is not a failing.

## If you found the name on a list of storm names

Leah is on the published 2026 Atlantic list of storm names, one of six lists the National Hurricane Center says are "used in rotation and re-cycled every six years" ([National Hurricane Center](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml)). Names are chosen years ahead, long before any storm, and if the name led you to Leah's story, it is worth knowing.

Other names on the 2026 storm lists with a story in the Bible: [Isaias](https://biblenudge.com/blog/isaias-name-meaning), [Rachel](https://biblenudge.com/blog/rachel-name-meaning-bible), [Simon](https://biblenudge.com/blog/simon-name-meaning-bible), [Josephine](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-josephine-a-biblical-name), [Marco](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-marco-a-biblical-name), [Omar](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-omar-a-biblical-name), [Paulette](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-paulette-a-biblical-name), [Sally](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-sally-a-biblical-name) and [Zeke](https://biblenudge.com/blog/zeke-name-meaning-bible).

## Where to go next

Any night that feels too heavy is a night to reach a person, and you are not asked to be fine first. In the United States, call or text 988 for the [988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline](https://988lifeline.org/contact-us/). In Canada, call or text 9-8-8. In the UK and Republic of Ireland, [Samaritans](https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/) is on 116 123. In Australia, [Lifeline](https://www.lifeline.org.au/crisis-support/) is 13 11 14. Anywhere else, [Find A Helpline](https://findahelpline.com/) lists lines by country.

One step for this week: send one message to one person, and read Psalm 25:16-17 once, aloud, with the question above. [Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) gives a person one passage with the story around it, and [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge) is where to start.
