You are not condemned for asking, or for using. Christians who love God land in different places on cannabis, no one is a lesser Christian for where they land, and the Bible never names it. If your use has become hard to control, that is a health condition with help available and not a moral failing, and talking to a doctor is a good first step.

One person posted on Reddit, in r/Christianity, ["I'm a Christian and I'm currently smoking weed to help wirh stress from work as a waiter. I was wondering if it's a sin or not?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1s2suiy/smoking_weed_as_a_christian/) You asked a fair question, and you are welcome here whatever your answer turns out to be.

## If you only have a minute

### First

You are not condemned for asking, and Christians who love God differ on cannabis.

### Words for the burden

[Matthew 11:28-30](https://biblenudge.com/context/matthew-11-28-30), an invitation to bring weariness to someone.

### What the Bible names

Wine and strong drink, not cannabis, smoking or vaping.

### If use feels hard to control

Talk to a doctor; help lines for five countries are at the end.

### For someone worried about a loved one

Offer to go along to the doctor.

## Matthew 11:28-30, for the burden under the question

Whatever sits under the question, the passage this site offers for anxiety is [Matthew 11:28-30](https://biblenudge.com/context/matthew-11-28-30):

> 28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus says it just after thanking the Father for revealing things "to infants" rather than to the wise, and he speaks to people already carrying heavy loads. The invitation takes difficulty for granted, and it goes on into learning from him as a way of life. What it gives is a way to bring the weariness to someone rather than carry it alone, in words that are gentle to read at night. Read it once, then hold one question: What burden are you trying to carry alone? [Is anxiety a sin](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-anxiety-a-sin) and [what the Bible says about anxiety](https://biblenudge.com/blog/what-does-the-bible-say-about-anxiety) read it too.

## What the Bible names

The Bible never mentions cannabis, smoking or vaping. Some writers have proposed that the Hebrew kaneh-bosem in Exodus 30:23 meant cannabis. The standard lexicon, [Brown, Driver and Briggs](https://biblehub.com/hebrew/7070.htm), glosses qaneh as "reed" or "cane" and besem as "spice" or "balsam," and the [Septuagint](https://www.blueletterbible.org/lxx/exo/30/23/s_80023) renders the phrase with a term for fragrant cane. The ancient world did use hemp for fiber, rope, medicine and ritual, and that alone does not decide the Exodus word.

The passages people reach for sit in their own settings. Genesis 1:29 gives "every herb yielding seed" as food. Galatians 5:19-23 lists "sorcery," the Greek pharmakeia, which [lexicons](https://biblehub.com/greek/5331.htm) define as sorcery or drug use in magical practice and not as a general word for medicine, and then the fruit of the Spirit, which ends in "self-control." Ephesians 5:18 says "Don’t be drunken with wine," and 1 Thessalonians 5:6 and 1 Peter 5:8 ask for being sober and watchful, from the Greek [nepho](https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/g3525/kjv/tr/0-1/). Some Christian writers extend that sobriety to cannabis because both alter awareness, and others read the words as general spiritual alertness.

## Your body is a temple, in its setting

This is the line people are most often handed. In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul writes to the church in Corinth about sexual immorality and the misuse of freedom, and he says "I will not be brought under the power of anything." Next:

> Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

In 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 the temple is the community, and "you" is plural. Chapter 10 adds, about meals and conscience, "Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Stricter readings apply "temple" and "glorify God in your body" to recreational cannabis. Looser readings point to the setting of sexual immorality and idol meals and apply the passage through principle. Neither passage names cannabis.

## Law and conscience

Rules differ by place, so check yours. Canada [legalized non-medical cannabis](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/c-24.5/) under the Cannabis Act. [California](https://cannabis.ca.gov/) and [Colorado](https://cannabis.colorado.gov/) permit adult use under state law while it stays controlled under [US federal law](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling), and [Texas](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/compassionate-use-program) permits only limited medical access. In the [United Kingdom](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cannabis-cbd-and-other-cannabinoids-drug-licensing-factsheet/drug-licensing-factsheet-cannabis-cbd-and-other-cannabinoids), [Ireland](https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/health/drugs-and-alcohol/drugs-and-the-law/) and [Australia](https://www.tga.gov.au/medicinal-cannabis), recreational possession remains unlawful, with medical routes.

Some traditions read Romans 13:1-7 and 1 Peter 2:13-17 as asking obedience where cannabis is prohibited, with Acts 5:29, "We must obey God rather than men," as the limit. Others turn to Romans 14, about food and days, where Paul writes "Let each man be fully assured in his own mind."

## How churches read it

The [Catechism of the Catholic Church](https://www.vatican.va/content/catechism/en/part_three/section_two/chapter_two/article_5/ii_respect_for_the_dignity_of_persons.html) (2290 to 2291) says "The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense." The United Methodist [Book of Resolutions](https://www.umcsc.org/home/wp-content/uploads/2016-Book-of-Resolutions.pdf) says "We urge all persons to abstain from all use of marijuana, unless it has been legally prescribed in a form appropriate for treating a particular medical condition." The Latter-day Saints apply the [Word of Wisdom](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/true-to-the-faith/word-of-wisdom?lang=eng), which does not name marijuana, to harmful and illegal substances, and [Seventh-day Adventists](https://adventist.org/health/) teach abstinence from intoxicating and harmful substances.

Rastafari communities, which have no single authority, describe cannabis as having sacramental, meditative and communal meaning in many settings. Orthodox and Anglican writing places it under sobriety, self-control and care for the body, and Jewish authorities differ, Orthodox voices commonly separating recreational from medical use. Among evangelicals, [Got Questions](https://www.gotquestions.org/marijuana-Christian.html) argues use is wrong when it intoxicates, impairs judgment or breaks the law, and other evangelical writers have published differing arguments on sobriety and conscience.

## Cannabis and anxiety

For anyone using cannabis for stress, health sources give a mixed account. The [National Institute on Drug Abuse](https://drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/marijuana-addictive) lists effects that can include "anxiety, fear, distrust, panic, or hallucinations." A [2020 systematic review](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022395620308955) found some evidence for particular cannabinoids in PTSD, social anxiety and generalized anxiety while calling the evidence limited, and a [2021 review in Psychiatric Services](https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.ps.202000189) found only eight small controlled studies. These findings concern different products, doses and people. Cannabis use disorder is a recognized clinical condition, which makes it a health matter and not a moral one. Talk to a doctor.

For medical use, the [FDA](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-and-cannabis-research-and-drug-approval-process) has approved Epidiolex and three synthetic cannabis-related drugs for particular conditions, the [UK](https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/medicinal-cannabis-information-and-resources) lets specialist doctors prescribe cannabis-based medicines, and [Health Canada](https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-medication/cannabis/medical-use-cannabis.html) and Australia's [TGA](https://www.tga.gov.au/medicinal-cannabis) each have a medical pathway, which both the Catechism and the Methodist resolution above allow for.

## What people say, and what helps

On Reddit's r/Christianity, one person wrote ["Since the Bible doesn't explicitly talk about weed, I feel like it's left up for interpretation but I also don't want to be intentionally ignorant"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1renb1a/is_smoking_weed_a_sin/) and, in the same thread, "I don't want to sin, but I am very confused if it is a sin." In another r/Christianity thread, a reply read ["i dunno i have sat and smoked and talked of the joys of being with god with other people... and i dont feel like it was a sin"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1iuwxp/is_smoking_weed_a_sin/).

If you are worried about a husband, wife or parent who uses, try "I've noticed you seem tired lately. Can I come with you to talk to a doctor, if you want?"
