Some people reading this want to know whether a ticket, a raffle or a night out is a problem. Christian traditions answer that differently, and nobody here is told they are in trouble with God. Others are in a harder place, with losses, debt or a secret. For them gambling harm is a health matter with named help, not a verdict on their character. If that is you, these are the lines to use tonight:

- **United States:** the [National Problem Gambling Helpline](https://www.ncpgambling.org/help-treatment/), 1-800-MY-RESET, call or text, with online chat; and the [1-800-GAMBLER network](https://www.1800gamblerchat.org/), text 800GAM.

## If you only have a minute

### If it has gotten heavy

Call or text one of the lines above this week.

### Words for the burden

[Matthew 11:28-30](https://biblenudge.com/context/matthew-11-28-30), an invitation to bring a weight to someone.

### Casting lots

The Bible records lots in rituals, land and choosing.

### Churches differ

Catholic, Methodist, Baptist and others land in different places.

### One step

Tell one person you trust, and read Matthew 11:28-30 aloud tonight.

## Words for the burden

Bible Nudge's passage for anxiety is [Matthew 11:28-30](https://biblenudge.com/context/matthew-11-28-30). It is a place to begin, whether you are ashamed, worn out from loving someone who gambles, or carrying something heavy:

> 28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

In the King James, verse 28 reads "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Jesus has just thanked the Father for revealing things to "infants," and then speaks to people carrying heavy burdens and invites them to come and learn from him. The invitation takes for granted that life is hard, and names him as gentle and humble.

It gives you an invitation to bring a weight to someone rather than carry it alone. Read it once, then hold one question: what burden are you trying to carry alone? Two pages go further, on [anxiety](https://biblenudge.com/blog/what-does-the-bible-say-about-anxiety) and on [addiction recovery](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-addiction-recovery), which lists support-group routes.

## Casting lots in Scripture

Readers ask whether the Bible approves chance, and lots do appear, each in its own setting. In Leviticus 16:8 "Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats; one lot for Yahweh, and the other lot for the scapegoat," in a Day of Atonement ritual. Joshua "cast lots for them in Shiloh before Yahweh" to divide land already surveyed. In Jonah 1:7 sailors say "let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us." In Acts 1:23-26 the apostles pray, then "drew lots" between two men who had accompanied them, and the lot fell on Matthias. John 19:24 has soldiers casting lots for Jesus' clothing. Proverbs 16:33 says, "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from Yahweh."

[Grace to You](https://www.gty.org/articles/A157/five-reasons-gambling-is-wrong) argues that biblical lots were for decision or allocation and not for profiting from another person's loss. Other Christian writers take the existence of lots as a sign that chance is not automatically named as sin, while applying separate principles about stewardship and harm.

## What the money passages say

No verse in the Bible names gambling. The passages people reach for are about money, and each has its audience. First Timothy is instruction to Timothy about teaching and conduct in the church, and 6:6-8 reads, "But godliness with contentment is great gain," and "having food and clothing, we will be content with that." In Luke 12:13-15 Jesus answers a dispute over an inheritance with a warning about covetousness. Proverbs 23:4-5 says "Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint." Hebrews, written to a Christian community, says "I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you."

These give you a question, what is enough, and a promise-shaped line in Hebrews 13:5. Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, Reformed and evangelical writers reason from them to different conclusions.

## How the traditions differ

The [Catechism of the Catholic Church](https://www.vatican.va/content/catechism/en/part_three/section_two/chapter_two/article_7/ii_respect_for_persons_and_their_goods.html), 2413: "Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement."

The [United Methodist Church](https://www.umc.org/content/book-of-resolutions-gambling) says Christians "should abstain from gambling" and, where it has become addictive, the Church "will encourage such individuals to receive therapeutic assistance." [The Salvation Army](https://www.salvationarmy.org/resources/international-positional-statement-gambling) says, "The Salvation Army is opposed to gambling." The Southern Baptist Convention's [2025 resolution](https://www.sbc.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/2025-SBC-Annual.pdf) called sports betting "harmful and predatory" and encouraged compassionate support for people struggling with gambling addiction. The [Latter-day Saints](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/language-materials/08702_eng.pdf?lang=eng) say, "The Church opposes gambling in any form, including government-sponsored lotteries." [Crossroads](https://www.crossroads.net/media/articles/is-gambling-a-sin) answers, "My answer: No. Unless it is," and asks about motive, control and consequences.

Jewish discussion in [Sanhedrin 24b](https://www.sefaria.org/Sanhedrin.24b-25a) records a dispute over whether dice players can be witnesses, and Islamic teaching classifies *maysir* as prohibited. These frameworks differ, and for many people it comes down to conscience and circumstance.

## Raffles, bingo and the lottery ticket

[Catholic Answers](https://www.catholic.com/qa/isnt-gambling-a-sin-how-can-you-catholics-justify-playing-bingo-in-church) separates the game itself from deprivation of necessities, addiction and cheating. Other bodies draw the line earlier, and the [Church of England](https://www.churchofengland.org/about/views/gambling-and-addiction) campaigns against gambling harm. Churches have both used and opposed lotteries for a long time, as the [Acton Institute](https://www.acton.org/religion-liberty/volume-33-number-2/what-does-it-profit-gambling-and-christian-tradition) traces.

Someone asked on Reddit's r/Christianity in 2024, ["As a Christian buy a lotto ticket is a sin?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1haf0p8) In 2025 another asked there whether giving away any payout would make it ["not gambling it's playing a game"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1j4kx2d). The traditions above answer it in different ways.

## When it has gotten heavy

Gambling is common, and so is harm. The National Council on Problem Gambling's [NGAGE 3.0](https://www.ncpgambling.org/training/ngage-survey/ngage-3/) (2024, 3,013 US adults) reports that 8 percent had at least one problematic indicator "many times" in the past year. The Gambling Commission's [Great Britain survey](https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/report/gambling-survey-for-great-britain-annual-report-2024-official-statistics/gsgb-annual-report-2024-headline-statistics) (2024) reports 2.7 percent scoring 8 or more on the Problem Gambling Severity Index. The two use different measures and are not directly comparable; both show that gambling harm is common.

The [American Psychiatric Association](https://dictionary.apa.org/gambling-disorder) lists gambling disorder among addictive disorders, and the [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/addiction-support/gambling-addiction/) says gambling can harm "relationships," "physical and mental health," and "finances." This is a health condition and not a moral failure, and the first step is one of the lines at the top. For family, [GamCare](https://www.gamcare.org.uk/news-and-blog/blog/dont-gamble-with-your-family/) says relatives can feel "ashamed, hurt, afraid, angry, confused and distrustful," and Gam-Anon is a fellowship for them.

## What people say, and what lands hard

One person on Reddit's [r/problemgambling](https://www.reddit.com/r/problemgambling/comments/1lc05xj) wrote in 2025, "The first few months after that were awesome I stopped completely but something led me back into one bet and from there it’s been paycheck after paycheck," and another reply there said, "The Lord is for those who struggle with gambling." On [r/Christianity](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1l5p6fz) that year someone wrote, "I love gambling, the very idea of it is so appealing." In the same threads, "just pray fervently" landed hard. In the site's own words: if you are carrying a loss, a call to a helpline is a good first move, and prayer can sit beside it.

![An empty park bench beside a gravel path, a paper cup on the ground below it](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-gambling-a-sin/the-park-bench.jpg)

*Somewhere to sit.*

For a partner or parent, one line to try, in the site's own words: "I love you, and I'm here. I'd like us to call one of the free lines together this week."

## Where to go next

If gambling harm has reached hopelessness, please reach a person tonight. In the United States, call or text 988 for the [988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline](https://988lifeline.org/). In Canada, call or text 9-8-8 at [988.ca](https://988.ca/). In the United Kingdom and Ireland, [Samaritans](https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/talk-us-phone/) is on 116 123. In Australia, [Lifeline](https://www.lifeline.org.au/crisis-chat/) is 13 11 14, and 000 in an emergency. Anywhere else, [Find A Helpline](https://findahelpline.com/) lists lines by country.

This week, call or text one of the gambling lines above, or tell one person you trust, and tonight read Matthew 11:28-30 aloud once with the question about the burden.

[Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) gives a person one passage with the story around it, and [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge) is where to start.
