If you are nervous about walking into a church, that is a normal way to arrive. Nothing about showing up requires you to believe anything, to dress a certain way or to know the prayers. You can come once, sit, listen and leave, and a person of any background, or none, is welcome to try it. If you are in a parked car, the words for the front door come first, then plain help for tonight.

## If you only have a minute

### Words for the front door

[Psalm 56:3](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-56-3-4), "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you," said once under your breath.

### You can

Come once, sit near the aisle, and leave when you want.

### Communion

At a Catholic Mass or an Orthodox liturgy a visitor can stay seated while others go forward.

### Clothes

Congregations set their own; check the visitor page.

### One step tonight

Pick one church from a directory and read its visitor page.

## Psalm 56:3-4, for the parking lot

The site's passage for fear is Psalm 56:3-4:

> When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

David prays it in danger. It opens, "Be merciful to me, God, for man wants to swallow me up," and verse 2 says, "My enemies want to swallow me up all day long." Its heading says David wrote it when the Philistines seized him in Gath. It moves between fear and trust without treating the fear as something to get past first. The first words, "When I am afraid," admit the fear, and the rest of the line is something to do while still afraid, which is where a person on a church step actually is. You might say verse 3 once under your breath before going in, and hold one question: what are you afraid of right now, if you say it plainly? Read it [in its setting](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-56-3-4); [is it a sin to be afraid](https://biblenudge.com/blog/is-it-a-sin-to-be-afraid) reads it at length.

## Who else is walking in

[Pew Research Center](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2016/08/23/2-religious-attendance-fluid-for-many-americans/) reported that 27 percent of Americans attend at least once or twice a month but once attended less regularly than now, and that 22 percent attend infrequently or never but once attended more. Among adults raised Catholic, Pew [reported](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2015/09/15/half-of-u-s-adults-raised-catholic-have-left-the-church-at-some-point/) that 52 percent had left at some point and a significant minority returned.

People describe the first time in their own words. Someone posted on Reddit in r/Christianity on 2024-10-11, ["I don't know what to do in my church cause I really don't know any prayers or anything so I just sat down and looked around."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1g1csje/) A reply said prayer is a conversation with God and "dont need to be ‘excellent’, just need to be the real you." Another post on Reddit in r/Christianity, from 2024-10-28, says ["I just picked it because it was closest and the people seemed nice."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1ge9zty/) A first Mass after half a life away was shared on Reddit in r/Catholicism on 2026-08-30: ["I just wanted to share my experience going to mass after basically half my life being away from the church."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/1w2h8g7/) And on Reddit in r/exchristian, on 2023-02-05, a new parent wrote of a first service, ["I am honestly dreading it."](https://www.reddit.com/r/exchristian/comments/10ucmkr/) Dread and relief are both ordinary, and many say the first time is the hardest.

## Tonight: finding a service and what to ask

Most denominations have a finder. In the United Kingdom, [A Church Near You](https://www.achurchnearyou.com/) lists Church of England services, and the [Church of Scotland](https://www.churchofscotland.org.uk/connect/find-a-church) has its own finder. In Ireland, try the [Church of Ireland](https://www.churchofireland.org/) or the [Catholic Bishops' Conference](https://catholicbishops.ie/). In the United States, try [Mass Times](https://masstimes.org/), the [Episcopal Church](https://www.episcopalchurch.org/find-a-church/), the [United Methodist Church](https://www.umc.org/find-a-church) or the [Orthodox Church in America](https://www.oca.org/parishes). In Canada there are the [Anglican Church of Canada](https://www.anglican.ca/locator/) and the [United Church of Canada](https://united-church.ca/community-faith), and in Australia the [Anglican Church of Australia](https://www.anglican.org.au/) and the [Uniting Church](https://uniting.church/).

A listing may not be current, so use the congregation's own page, or a call or message, to confirm the time, the dress, the Communion statement, children's rooms and access such as step-free entry, large-print materials, a quiet room or seating. Some ideas of our own: go once without deciding anything, arrive a few minutes early, choose a seat near the aisle or the back if that helps, follow what the people around you do, and leave when you want.

On what to wear, congregations set their own, so look at the visitor or worship page. Scripture puts the weight somewhere other than clothes. In Luke 18:9-14, two men go to the temple to pray. One stands and prays "to himself" about how he is not like other people; the other, "standing far away," will not lift his eyes and says, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!" The story ends on humility.

## Church traditions differ, and which is which matters

**Catholic Mass.** The USCCB's [guidelines](https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/guidelines-for-the-reception-of-communion) say that "members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion." They also say, "All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another," and "We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ." A visitor can stay seated and pray there.

**Orthodox Divine Liturgy.** The [Orthodox Church in America](https://www.oca.org/orthodoxy/the-orthodox-faith/worship/the-divine-liturgy/the-divine-liturgy) says non-Orthodox Christians and even non-Christians are generally allowed to witness the Liturgy, while Communion is reserved to members of the Orthodox Church. Its [Attending Services](https://www.oca.org/questions/liturgicalservices/attending-services) page recognizes visitors who attend without receiving. After the service, bread called antidoron is given, which [means](https://www.oca.org/orthodoxy/the-orthodox-faith/worship/the-divine-liturgy/communion) "instead of the gift." Standing, head coverings, seating, incense and length vary by jurisdiction and parish.

**Other congregations.** In Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, evangelical and Pentecostal churches, historically Black congregations and Quaker meetings, music, offering, greeting and sermon length differ, so read that church's own page.

## What Scripture says about welcoming a stranger

For an hour, you are the stranger, and Scripture speaks about that. Leviticus 19:33-34 tells Israel, "you shall not do him wrong," about the foreigner among them, "for you lived as foreigners in the land of Egypt"; [Sefaria](https://www.sefaria.org/Leviticus.19) places it in the holiness laws, a Jewish reading distinct from a Christian one. Romans 15:7 says, "accept one another, even as Christ also accepted you." Hebrews 13:2 says, "Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers." In Matthew 25:35, Jesus says, "I was a stranger, and you took me in." John 6:37 says, "He who comes to me I will in no way throw out." A congregation that reads these is asked to welcome whoever walks in, and you are allowed to be that person.

## When it is more than nerves, and when church has hurt

The NHS [says](https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/social-anxiety/) "Many people occasionally worry about social situations, but someone with social anxiety feels overly worried before, during and after them," and the [Anxiety and Depression Association of America](https://adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/social-anxiety-disorder) describes "fear of being judged, negatively evaluated, or rejected." A doctor is a good person to ask about help.

If your last church hurt, you are allowed to be careful. Someone posted on Reddit in r/Exvangelical on 2024-11-19, ["But to be honest, i’m scared."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Exvangelical/comments/1guzh5d/) They added, "I miss community, and I miss singing in a congregation with people." On Reddit in r/SeriousConversation, someone wrote of a [small church](https://www.reddit.com/r/SeriousConversation/comments/1b8x4bp/), "I’ve never felt more alone than in a clickish church of 75 people." Congregations differ, you may visit a different one, and no congregation suits everyone. A church's pastoral-care and safeguarding contacts are local, and it is fair to ask how it handles a concern. [Bible verses for feeling left out](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-feeling-left-out) has a section on feeling left out at church.

If a friend invited you, you can ask for wording like this, or offer it to someone else:

- "No pressure to join in. I'll sit with you, and we can leave whenever you want."
- "You don't have to know the prayers; I'll tell you what's coming."

## Where to go next

These lines are for any night that feels too heavy, whatever the reason. In the United States, call or text 988 for the [988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline](https://988lifeline.org/). In Canada, call or text 9-8-8, or reach [Talk Suicide Canada](https://talksuicide.ca/) on 1-833-456-4566. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, [Samaritans](https://www.samaritans.org/) is on 116 123. In Australia, [Lifeline](https://www.lifeline.org.au/get-help/national-services/lifeline-crisis-support) is 13 11 14. Anywhere else, [Find A Helpline](https://findahelpline.com/) lists lines by country.

Tonight, pick one church from a directory, read its visitor page, and say Psalm 56:3 once before you go in. [Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) gives a person one passage with the story around it, and [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge) is where to start.

## Words that come up here

Tap a term to see what it means.

**Communion.** The shared bread and wine in many Christian services, which churches offer on their own terms.

**Antidoron.** Blessed bread given after an Orthodox liturgy, open to visitors who did not receive Communion.
