Nobody is condemned for going to a yoga class, or for staying away. Christians who love God land in different places on yoga, and people who practice it as part of their own faith deserve to be described in their own words too. This is for the person with a sore back, the person who was warned off, and the person whose family practices Hinduism. One poster on Reddit's r/yoga [wrote](https://www.reddit.com/r/yoga/comments/1fp00hk/), "So I had my parent tell me recently that yoga is demonic." You can ask this question calmly and take your time with the answer.

## If you only have a minute

### Words for a troubled heart

[John 14:27](https://biblenudge.com/context/john-14-27), peace described as something given.

### Where yoga comes from

Hindu roots, a modern posture practice, and many settings today.

### The Corinthians passages

Paul writes about meat from idol temples, conscience and love.

### Where churches land

Different places, from avoiding it to treating it as a matter of conscience.

### If a body concern is behind the question

Talk to a doctor or other qualified professional.

## John 14:27, for the peace people look for

The passage this site offers for peace is [John 14:27](https://biblenudge.com/context/john-14-27), spoken on the last evening before Jesus' arrest, in a frightened room:

> Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

The King James Version has "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you." Just before it Jesus promises that the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, will teach and remind them, and just after it he tells them he is going away. These are words for people about to lose everything, and they describe peace as something given. Read them once, then hold the question: What would change if peace were something handed to you rather than something you have to produce? [Bible verses for peace of mind](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-peace-of-mind) reads the passage in full.

## What yoga is, and where it came from

The [NCCIH](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/yoga-effectiveness-and-safety) says yoga typically combines "physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation," and that classical yoga includes other elements, "such as a spiritual practice." In [Yoga Body](https://books.google.com/books/about/Yoga_Body.html?id=4oAjDgAAQBAJ), Mark Singleton argues that the posture practice now popular worldwide owes major debts to modern Indian nationalism and to European and American physical-culture movements, and he separates it from earlier hatha yoga. The Hindu American Foundation says [yoga is rooted in Hindu traditions](https://www.hinduamerican.org/projects/hindu-roots-of-yoga): "At its broadest, yoga, from the root word ‘yuj’ in Sanskrit, means to unite." Aseem Shukla wrote in [The Great Yoga Debate](https://www.hinduamerican.org/blog/the-great-yoga-debate-aseem-shukla-v-deepak-chopra) that "the severance of yoga from Hinduism disenfranchises millions of Hindu Americans from their spiritual heritage." Other scholars describe yoga as Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, secular, therapeutic or commercial depending on the setting.

For scale, [Pew reports](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2025/02/26/spiritual-activities/) that 15 percent of American adults practiced yoga at least a few times a month, 11 percent mainly for health, enjoyment or another nonspiritual reason. [Pew's India survey](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2021/07/06/most-indians-including-most-hindus-do-not-practice-yoga/) found that 24 percent of Christians there practice yoga. Both figures describe participation, not doctrine.

## The passages people quote, in their settings

Paul writes to the church in Corinth about meat tied to idol temples, markets and meals, speaking to people who claim "knowledge" and to those whose consciences are "weak." In 1 Corinthians 8 he says "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up" and "no idol is anything in the world," and asks that liberty not become "a stumbling block to the weak." In chapter 10 he says "flee from idolatry," and ends, "Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Romans 14, about food and days, adds "Let each man be fully assured in his own mind." Colossians 2:8 warns against being robbed "through his philosophy and vain deceit," and commentators differ on what "the elements of the world" means. Philippians 4:8 invites a mind on "whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable."

Stricter readers apply these texts to yoga's religious history, and looser readers apply them to a gym class as a matter of conscience. [J. D. Greear’s Romans 14 study](https://jdgreear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/29-Romans-14_1-15_-Unity-Over-Uniformity-1.pdf) states both: "That's a Buddhist practice, and you can't separate the practice from the origins," and "Yoga is just good stretching and there's nothing anti-Christian about it."

## Stillness and prayer, in Scripture

For the reader who wants a Christian way to quiet down, Psalm 46:10 says "Be still, and know that I am God." The Hebrew behind "be still" is glossed "cease" or "let go," and commentators read it as a call to stop striving. Psalm 1:2 says the one who delights in God’s law "meditates day and night," and the Hebrew verb means to ponder, murmur or rehearse, which commentators tie to repeated engagement with God’s instruction. The Gospels give a pattern a person can follow: "Early in the morning, while it was still dark, he rose up and went out, and departed into a deserted place, and prayed there" (Mark 1:35), and "he withdrew himself into the desert, and prayed" (Luke 5:16). The Gospels do not record Jesus practicing yoga, and the best-known modern claim, Nicolas Notovitch's 1894 book, has been treated as [unreliable by historians](https://ehrmanblog.org/jesus-in-india/).

## How churches describe it

The Vatican's [Orationis formas](https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_19891015_meditazione-cristiana_en.html) (1989) says some methods use Eastern practices "only as a psycho-physical preparation for a truly Christian contemplation," while other approaches seek experiences that may not fit Christian belief. The [Catechism](https://www.vatican.va/content/catechism/en/part_four/section_one/chapter_three/article_1/ii_meditation.html) says "a method is only a guide; the important thing is to advance, with the Holy Spirit, along the one way of prayer: Christ Jesus." [Catholic Answers](https://www.catholic.com/qa/what-does-the-church-say-about-yoga) says "faithful Catholics of good will can have differing opinions about the prudence of doing yoga exercises." Orthodox views vary by jurisdiction and priest, and a [Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada publication](https://www.uocc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/visnyk-2015-05.pdf) distinguishes Christian prayer from yoga philosophy.

Among Protestants, [Albert Mohler](https://repository.sbts.edu/bitstream/handle/10392/840/2010-09-20.pdf?isAllowed=y&sequence=1) wrote in 2010 "There is nothing wrong with stretching exercises," but that yoga’s practices "are not about mere stretching." [Greear](https://jdgreear.com/podcasts/is-it-wrong-for-christians-to-do-yoga/) says "not all practices with pagan origins are off-limits for Christians" and calls it a matter of conscience and unity. [Crossroads](https://www.crossroads.net/media/podcasts/audio-articles/can-christians-do-yoga) says yoga has "many contexts, many types of instructors." [Got Questions](https://www.gotquestions.org/Christian-yoga.html) asks whether the physical can be separated from the spiritual, and [Holy Yoga](https://holyyoga.net/about/) describes itself as "a Christ-centered community."

## Hindu, Jewish and other voices

The Hindu American Foundation’s Take Back Yoga campaign began in 2008 out of concern that popular accounts left out Hindu history, while other Hindu teachers welcome non-Hindu participation and describe the context. Traditional Indian teachers told [TIME](https://time.com/5315571/international-yoga-day-2018/) in 2018 of concern that yoga had become "little more than a series of stretching exercises, divorced from its roots as a meditative discipline." Jewish authorities do not give one position, Orthodox discussions commonly distinguishing exercise from religious invocation, and Reform and Conservative communities often host yoga or mindfulness classes. Muslim views in public discussion likewise distinguish exercise from spiritual practice.

## What people say

In the [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/b1b7aad759e447b7dbf11be20cc1d576), a Latter-day Saint practitioner said "When I close my eyes and focus on him during shavasana, it helps me leave all my worries behind and trust in God more." On Reddit's r/TrueChristian, one reply to a [yoga question](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChristian/comments/1aqqwur/) was "Skip the chanting and all that and just do the stretches," and on r/OrthodoxChristianity [another](https://www.reddit.com/r/OrthodoxChristianity/comments/1nu51wv/) was "You can stretch, but all the spiritual or symbolic aspects of yoga are incompatible with Christianity." When someone says yoga is demonic, a kinder line is "Plenty of Christians have thought hard about this and come out in different places; you can take your time."

For the body, the NCCIH says studies suggest yoga may help with stress, sleep and mental health and may give a small benefit for low-back pain, and the [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/back-pain/) says activities like walking, swimming, yoga and Pilates "may also help ease back pain." Talk to a doctor or other qualified professional.

## Where to go next

Options include church-run stretching or movement classes, community yoga, Pilates, physiotherapy, tai chi and qigong, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and Christian prayer practices such as lectio divina, the Examen and breath-linked prayer.
