[Psalm 34:18](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-34-18) puts God beside a broken heart without attaching a single condition to the breaking. There is no clause about what was lost, no ranking of one grief against another, and no test to pass before the sentence applies to you. That turns out to matter a great deal for a loss other people are quick to measure.

Psalm 34:18. In the King James:

> Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

> The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

## The short version

### It does not ask

Psalm 34:18 names where God is when a heart is broken. There is no clause about who or what did the breaking, and no test to pass first.

### The guilt is the common part

Where euthanasia was chosen, guilt is what pet bereavement services report most. The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement says most people believe they decided too late or too soon.

### It is not disproportionate

Ohio State and the APLB both use a name for this: disenfranchised grief, meaning a loss others do not treat as real.

### Scripture does talk about animals

Four passages below, in context. None of them settles whether you will see your animal again, and no Christian tradition can point to a passage that does.

## The guilt of having chosen the day

If you made the decision, the guilt that comes with it is a weight of its own, sitting separately from the missing.

The [Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement](https://www.aplb.org/understanding-euthanasia/) calls euthanasia a decision with “opposing truths”: the humane thing to do, and at the same time “a psychological nightmare of confusion, guilt, and even final responsibility for the human.” It goes on: “Most people worry that they made the decision to euthanize their pet too late, or too soon. Rarely do people recognize they took the decision at the right time.”

[Blue Cross](https://www.bluecross.org.uk/preparing-say-goodbye-your-pet) records the same range and does not tidy it: some people describe guilt or numbness afterwards, others a sense of calm and relief. [Cornell](https://www.vet.cornell.edu/about-us/outreach/pet-loss-support-hotline) says the decision whether to stay in the room is a personal one, and that people who did not stay often want to see the body afterwards.

Here is how people say it themselves. “I still feel so guilty, like I gave up on my boy.” “I chose euthanasia, and now I feel like I’m on fire.” “I feel like I betrayed him.” “The emptiness I expected. The guilt not so much.” All four were posted on Reddit's [r/Petloss](https://www.reddit.com/r/Petloss/comments/1esdmuv), across four different years.

## Why this grief goes unacknowledged

Grief that other people decline to count has a name. The term is **disenfranchised grief**, and Kenneth Doka gave it in 1989 to grief “that is not or cannot be openly acknowledged, socially sanctioned or publicly mourned”.

Pet loss organizations apply it directly. The [APLB](https://www.aplb.org/support/) says pet loss is “often misunderstood or minimized” and names it as disenfranchised grief. [Ohio State University’s Veterinary Medical Center](https://vmc.vet.osu.edu/sites/default/files/documents/coping_with_loss_brochure_2020_web.pdf) says society does not recognize it as a valid form of grief compared with the loss of a human life, so the support you would otherwise expect may not arrive. Tufts, which has run a pet loss hotline for over twenty-five years, reports callers saying they cannot talk about it with the people in their lives, and quotes what they get told instead: [“it’s only a cat” and “just get another dog”](https://now.tufts.edu/2021/07/15/resource-grieving-pet-owners-25-years).

Psalm 34:18 was not written about an animal. It was also not written with a list of losses that qualify.

## What Scripture actually says about animals

Four passages, in the World English Bible, with what is around them.

**[Job 12:7-10](https://biblenudge.com/context/job-12-7-10).** “But ask the animals, now, and they shall teach you; the birds of the sky, and they shall tell you.” It runs on to “in whose hand is the life of every living thing”. Job is arguing with friends who have been explaining his suffering to him, and his point is that the animals know something they do not.

**[Psalm 36:5-6](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-36-5-6).** The psalm climbs through loving kindness in the heavens, faithfulness to the skies, righteousness like mountains, judgments like a great deep, and then lands on five plain words: “Yahweh, you preserve man and animal.”

**[Matthew 10:29-31](https://biblenudge.com/context/matthew-10-29-31).** “Aren’t two sparrows sold for an assarion coin? Not one of them falls on the ground apart from your Father’s will.” Said to people being sent somewhere dangerous. The sparrow is the cheapest thing in the market and it is the example chosen.

**[Proverbs 12:10](https://biblenudge.com/context/proverbs-12-10).** “A righteous man respects the life of his animal.” A line about character, in a book of them, which treats how somebody treats an animal as a thing worth knowing about them.

## Will you see them again

It is the real question, and Scripture does not settle it.

[GotQuestions](https://www.gotquestions.org/pets-heaven.html) concludes: “The Bible does not give any explicit teaching on whether animals have souls or whether our pets will be in heaven.” Its [page on grieving a pet](https://www.gotquestions.org/grieving-the-loss-of-a-pet.html) arrives at the same place in the same words. [Crosswalk](https://www.crosswalk.com/family/parenting/how-to-help-your-child-handle-the-loss-of-a-pet.html) puts it as “there really isn’t a firm indication in Scripture that pets go to Heaven. They may, or they may not.”

Christian traditions differ on it, and none of them can point to a passage that closes the question.

What the passages above do say is that the animals are in God’s hand, that he preserves them, and that not one sparrow falls unnoticed. That is less than you wanted and it is not nothing.

## Where to go next

[Read Psalm 34:18 with the verses on either side](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-34-18), along with the King James reading.

The [grief page](https://biblenudge.com/resources/grief) covers the wider ground, and if guilt is the part that will not settle, [Psalm 103:8-12](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-103-8-12) is the passage for that.

[Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) will take a sentence about your animal in your own words, without asking you to file it under anything. [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge).

Cornell says that if sleep, eating or ordinary tasks stay disrupted, that is the point at which support is worth having, and it runs a [pet loss hotline](https://www.vet.cornell.edu/impact/community-impact/pet-loss-resources-and-support) staffed by veterinary students. If any of this has turned into not wanting to be here, in the United States the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is 988, by call or text, and outside the US [Find A Helpline](https://findahelpline.com) lists services by country.

## Words that come up here

Tap a term to see what it means.

**Disenfranchised grief.** A loss the people around the griever do not treat as a real bereavement, so the support that would otherwise arrive never does. Kenneth Doka named it in 1989, and pet loss is the case it fits most often.

**Euthanasia remorse.** The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement’s name for the guilt that follows choosing the day, whichever day was chosen.

**Assarion.** The small Roman copper coin in [Matthew 10:29](https://biblenudge.com/context/matthew-10-29-31). Two sparrows for one of them is the point: it is the cheapest thing being counted.

**Agonal breathing.** The reflex breaths a body can take after death, which Cornell names in advance because owners who witness it often think something went wrong.
