Some of the plainest sentences about this loss come from people explaining it to others on Reddit. ["I didn't lose a parent, a sibling, or a partner. I lost a best friend and it's so painful,"](https://www.reddit.com/r/grief/comments/1wnux5o/) one person wrote on r/grief, and of the same friend, ["She was truly like a sister to me."](https://www.reddit.com/r/grief/comments/1wnux5o/) Another Reddit user put it more bluntly: ["This is sibling loss to me."](https://www.reddit.com/r/grief/comments/1wlzkzc/) If your friend was that close, the Bible has a place for you to start. When Jonathan died, David did not grieve him quietly. He wrote a lament, had it taught to a whole people, and addressed one line of it straight to his friend.

## If you only have a minute

### A friend grieved out loud

2 Samuel 1:26, where David says, "I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan."

### The passage for grief

[Psalm 34:18](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-34-18), "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart."

### Jesus and his friend

John 11, where Jesus calls Lazarus "our friend" and weeps at his tomb.

### If others do not see it

Friends are often left out of the mourning, and bereavement charities say so plainly.

### If it is getting harder

The crisis lines at the end name their countries.

## David's lament for Jonathan

Jonathan was the son of King Saul and by rights the heir to his throne. David was the man who would take that throne instead, and the two were friends anyway. Earlier in the story, "the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul" (1 Samuel 18:1). Then Saul and Jonathan both died in battle on the mountains of Gilboa, and a messenger brought David the news.

What David did next is in 2 Samuel 1:17-27. He "lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son," and he "commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow." The grief was written down and sung. Near the end, the lament stops speaking about Jonathan and speaks to him:

> I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

That is verse 26 in the World English Bible. David was not Jonathan's brother by birth, and he calls him "my brother" anyway, the same word people reach for now when "friend" sounds too small. A friend's death is grieved in the Bible at length, in public, by a man about to become king.

One way to use it tonight is to read the whole lament, eleven verses, and stop at verse 26. Read it once as David's words, and then, if it fits, again with your friend's name in place of Jonathan's.

## How verse 26 has been read

The last line of that verse is read in more than one way. The commentator Matthew Henry calls Jonathan David's ["sworn friend"](https://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/2-samuel/1.html) and says his love "far surpassed the highest degree of conjugal affection and constancy." Ellicott's Commentary reads the line as ["comparing Jonathan's love for David to that of the faithful wife for her husband."](https://openbible.com/commentaries/2_samuel/1-26.htm) John Chrysostom, the fourth-century bishop, uses the verse as an example of a soul ["knit"](https://catenabible.com/com/5de46d0b8b87fe0847ee86cb) to another in friendship. Modern readers have proposed other readings too. These traditions do not agree, and the verse can be read without settling them.

*A friendship often lives in small routines that nobody else knew about.*

## Psalm 34:18

The passage this site offers for grief is a single verse:

> Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

It says where God is and asks nothing of you first. The verse before it says "The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles," and the verse after says "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all." The psalm holds nearness and rescue together and gives no timetable for either. You can [read Psalm 34:18 with the verses around it](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-34-18), and the [page on losing a parent](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-the-loss-of-a-parent) explains why it was chosen over [Romans 8:28](https://biblenudge.com/context/romans-8-28).

## Jesus and his friend Lazarus

John 11 can be read from the side of Martha and Mary, and the [page on losing a brother](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-the-loss-of-a-brother) reads it that way. From Jesus' side, it is a story about a friend. The sisters send word: "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick." Jesus tells his disciples, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep," and has to explain that he means Lazarus has died.

At the tomb comes the shortest verse in the Bible: "Jesus wept" ([John 11:35](https://biblenudge.com/context/john-11-35)). The people standing there read his tears the way anyone would: "See how much affection he had for him!" Before Lazarus is called out of the grave, the chapter lets Jesus stand at a friend's tomb and cry in front of everyone.

## When people do not see the size of it

A friend is often not treated as a mourner. You may have heard last, been left out of the funeral plans, or been unable to go. One person on Reddit's r/GriefSupport wrote, ["There is no funeral notice for my friend even now."](https://www.reddit.com/r/GriefSupport/comments/1tkdj3p/)

The bereavement charity Cruse speaks to this on its page about [losing a friend](https://www.cruse.org.uk/understanding-grief/grief-experiences/losing-a-friend/): "The death of a close friend is just as painful as that of a close relative. But others around you might not always recognise this." It adds that a friend of your own age can "remind you that you too will die one day."

Researchers call grief that others do not acknowledge disenfranchised grief. Valtorta and colleagues, studying UK adults after a close friend died, describe friend bereavement as ["an experience which receives less social support because the relationship is of lower status than kin, and hence a form of disenfranchised grief."](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6448887/) The rules often follow the same line. Bereavement leave in many laws covers family only; the [Canada Labour Code](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/l-2/page-30.html), for one, grants it "in the event of the death of a member of their immediate family." None of that makes the loss smaller. It means the people and systems around you may have no place for it, and David's lament is one place in Scripture that does.

*Friends leave things with each other, and they stay.*

## If you are young and this is your first loss this close

The Childhood Bereavement Network's report [Grief Matters for Children](https://childhoodbereavementnetwork.org.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/files/grief-matters-for-children-2017.pdf) found that "Around 1 in 16 have been bereaved of a friend," and that young people may later "revisit their grief, experiencing and expressing it in new ways." If, as one person wrote on Reddit's r/Advice, you have ["never dealt with grief this close before,"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Advice/comments/ln5lsg/) it may help to tell one adult you trust, a parent, a teacher or a school counselor, who your friend was to you.

## If your friend died by suicide

If your friend died by suicide, the questions that follow often have no single answer, and they are not something to carry by yourself. Please talk to a person, someone you trust or one of the lines at the end of this page, which name their countries. Psalm 34:18 does not explain what happened. It says where God is while you are in it.

## The friendship verses people send

You may be sent verses about friendship. They describe friendship rather than its loss, and each has its own setting.

**Proverbs 17:17**, "A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity." A wisdom saying among other short observations about everyday life.

**Proverbs 18:24**, "A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." A wisdom saying setting many companions against one close friend.

**Ecclesiastes 4:9**, "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor." The Teacher's observation about how hard life is alone.

**John 15:13**, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." Jesus to his disciples on his last night, pointing toward his own death.

If you are choosing a reading for a service, the [page on Bible verses for a funeral](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-a-funeral) covers how people choose, and the verses around [Revelation 21:4](https://biblenudge.com/context/revelation-21-4) are worth reading first.

## Questions people ask

**Is there a Bible verse about losing a best friend?** 2 Samuel 1:26, David's line to Jonathan after his death: "I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan." It comes in a lament David had taught to the people of Judah.

**Is it normal to grieve a friend as much as family?** Cruse says it can be "just as painful as that of a close relative." What differs is usually the recognition from others, not the pain.

**How long does grief for a friend last?** There is no set length. The World Health Organization's [ICD-11](https://icd.who.int/browse11/l-m/en#/http://id.who.int/icd/entity/1183832314) uses the term prolonged grief disorder only past six months with serious impairment, and the [American Psychiatric Association](https://www.psychiatry.org/getmedia/2ed086b0-ec88-42ec-aa0e-f442e4af74e6/APA-DSM5TR-Update-September-2024.pdf) sets at least twelve months for adults and six for young people.

## Words that come up here

Tap a term to see what it means.

**Lament.** A poem or song of grief spoken aloud. David's lament fills 2 Samuel 1:19-27.

**Jonathan.** King Saul's son and David's closest friend, who died in battle beside his father.

**Disenfranchised grief.** Grief that the people around a mourner do not openly acknowledge or support.

**Prolonged grief disorder.** A clinical term for grief that stays intense and disabling well beyond the usual time. It is not a label for ordinary grief.
