Some people read this with a search tab open beside it. One person posted on Reddit's r/Christianity, ["I need to stop googling, but how do I do that?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1o8z61f/), explaining that ["when that comes back clear, im looking for the next thing to be worried about."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1o8z61f/) Another wrote on r/TrueChristian, ["I have medical anxiety, and now I’m in a situation where I’m going to medical appointments and procedures often. I’m often shaking in fear."](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChristian/comments/19cy8o2/)

The passages here speak to the fear; a doctor is the person for the symptom, for a new or changing one, and for the worry itself. Bible Nudge's passage for fear, [Psalm 56:3-4](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-56-3-4), is short enough to say while the next search waits.

## If you only have a minute

### While you are afraid

Psalm 56:3-4, "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you."

### When the urge to check comes

Say verse 3 once, name the fear plainly, and let the search wait.

### If the worry runs your days

See a doctor about the worry itself, not only the symptom.

## Psalm 56:3-4, words for while you are afraid

The psalm's heading sets it at the time the Philistines seized David in Gath. It opens, "Be merciful to me, God, for man wants to swallow me up. All day long, he attacks and oppresses me. My enemies want to swallow me up all day long, for they are many who fight proudly against me." Then:

> When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

It was chosen because it admits the fear in its opening words and says what to do while still afraid. For a worry about the body that matters twice over: the psalm speaks about trust rather than about your body, so it gives the worry nothing to test, and you can read it once and leave it.

The next time the urge to check comes, say verse 3 once. Then ask its question, "What are you afraid of right now, if you say it plainly?", and let the search wait. [Bible verses for fear of the future](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-fear-of-the-future) reads the psalm closely.

*One line first.*

## Why a clear result does not settle it

The [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/health-anxiety/) lists signs including "frequently check your body for signs of illness," "always asking people for reassurance that you're not ill," the worry "that a doctor or medical tests may have missed something," and the urge to "obsessively look at health information on the internet or in the media." A [2016 study in Psychosomatics](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.psym.2016.02.002), of 731 people who searched symptoms online, says "cognitive-behavioural models now posit that reassurance-seeking is a maintaining factor in health anxiety." The [University of Rochester Medical Center](https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/behavioral-health-partners/bhp-blog/january-2024/identifying-and-coping-with-health-anxiety) writes, "When you receive tests or a doctor reassures you that you do not have an illness, it does not relieve your anxiety."

Those sources describe reassurance generally, not Bible reading. You may still notice whether a verse has become one more check. Psalm 56 is offered as words for while you are afraid, not as an answer about your body, and the [fear of the future post](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-fear-of-the-future) explains why one more check rarely settles a worry.

## What doctors call it

For words to take to an appointment, the [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/health-anxiety/) says, "Health anxiety is when you spend so much time worrying you're ill, or going to get ill, that it starts to take over your life. It's related to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)." [ICD-11](https://www.findacode.com/icd-11/block-675329566.html), the World Health Organization's classification, names hypochondriasis (6B23), "persistent preoccupation or fear about the possibility of having one or more serious, progressive or life-threatening illnesses," with checking, searching, "repeatedly seeking reassurance," or avoiding appointments. The [APA Dictionary](https://dictionary.apa.org/illness-anxiety-disorder) describes DSM-5-TR illness anxiety disorder as "high anxiety about one’s health" with "no significant somatic symptoms that would warrant such concern," and somatic symptom disorder as "predominantly characterized by the presence of bodily symptoms associated with severe distress and impairment." Your doctor can say which, if any, fits.

## The woman who had spent all she had

Mark 5 comes closest:

> A certain woman, who had an issue of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse, having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd, and touched his clothes.

Jesus asks, "Who touched my clothes?" Then "the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth." The [Cambridge Bible](https://www.biblehub.com/commentaries/mark/5-33.htm), an Anglican academic commentary, says she "may have dreaded His anger," since under Leviticus 15:19 her touch made others ceremonially unclean. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown, a Protestant commentary on the [same page](https://www.biblehub.com/commentaries/mark/5-33.htm), calls her "alarmed" at "the necessity of so public an exposure." The [Catholic Catechism](https://www.vatican.va/content/catechism/en/part_two/section_two/chapter_two/article_5/i_its_foundations_in_the_economy_of_salvation.html) (1503) says Christ came "to heal the whole man, soul and body."

The story ends with her healed: "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease." That is the text telling what happened to her. What someone with years of appointments may recognize is the rest: the fear, the money spent, the doctors, and a woman who told the whole truth to someone who stopped for her.

*Another appointment.*

## When the fear lives in the body

Psalm 31, a lament its heading gives to David, says "My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief," and later, "But I trust in you, Yahweh," and "My times are in your hand." [Bible verses before surgery](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-before-surgery) reads other lines of it.

If your fear began when somebody you love fell ill, Philippians 2:25-30 has worry running both ways between friends: Epaphroditus "was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick," and Paul was spared "sorrow on sorrow." The [Centre for Clinical Interventions](https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/~/media/CCI/Consumer-Modules/Helping-Health-Anxiety/Helping-Health-Anxiety---02---How-Health-Anxiety-Develops.pdf), an Australian clinical service, offers one explanation: "If we have witnessed someone suffer a prolonged disease prior to death, we may associate illness with intense suffering and certain death."

## If you were ill before

The [American Cancer Society](https://www.cancer.org/cancer/survivorship/recurrence.html), about people after treatment, says "Worrying about cancer coming back is common and usually most intense the first year after treatment." [Cancer Care Ontario](https://www.cancercareontario.ca/en/guidelines-advice/types-of-cancer/75576)'s 2023 guideline for adult cancer survivors defines fear of recurrence as "fear, worry or concern relating to the possibility that cancer will come back or progress." One person posted on Reddit's r/TrueChristian, ["my biggest fear is that i’ll become a Job."](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChristian/comments/vrrwjd/) Tell your care team about the fear as well as the symptom. If you are caring for somebody who is ill, see [Bible verses for cancer caregivers](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-cancer-caregivers); Job is read in [what the Bible says about suffering](https://biblenudge.com/blog/what-does-the-bible-say-about-suffering).

## If you have been told it means weak faith

One person on Reddit's r/PrayerRequests reported a belief in their church that ["taking meds was a lack of faith."](https://www.reddit.com/r/PrayerRequests/comments/1dzh2k3/) On r/Christian, another wrote ["my mom always says ‘claim what he promises to you’"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christian/comments/18evr7o/), and a reply to somebody asking how to stop googling said ["The only solution is theology and trust."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1o8z61f/)

[Matthew Henry](https://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/matthew/6.html), from the Reformed tradition, says Matthew 6:34 "does not forbid necessary thought for the morrow, or a prudent and provident care," but "forbids perplexing thought for the morrow." One person on Reddit's r/Christianity held onto that verse and wrote, ["I'm really struggling to even breathe steadily from moment to moment right now."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/i8haym/) The [Orthodox Church in America](https://www.oca.org/orthodoxy/the-orthodox-faith/spirituality/sickness-suffering-and-death/sickness) says sickness comes from "the sin of the world," and "This does not mean that people are necessarily being personally punished with their diseases." In John 9, asked who sinned, a blind man or his parents, Jesus answers, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but, that the works of God might be revealed in him."

Bible Nudge's notes on Psalm 56 are plain that a frightened person has not failed to trust God. You can set Henry's "prudent and provident care" beside your next appointment.

## The healing verses people send

Each has a setting.

## Where the healing verses sit

### Exodus 15:26

"I am Yahweh who heals you," spoken to Israel at Marah after the Exodus, with its conditions in the same verse.

### Isaiah 53:5

"by his wounds we are healed," in a song about the Servant who "was pierced for our transgressions."

### 3 John 2

"I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy," the elder's greeting to his friend Gaius.

### Psalm 139:14

"I am fearfully and wonderfully made," David praising God who formed him in the womb.

On Isaiah 53, [IVP's commentary](https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/ivp-nt/Healing-Is-Part-Jesus-Mission) reads the setting chiefly as healing from sin, while noting Matthew 8:17's use of verse 4. R. C. Sproul at [Ligonier](https://www.ligonier.org/posts/what-does-it-mean-his-wounds-we-are-healed), from the Reformed tradition, places bodily healing in the final scope of redemption rather than as a present cure. Jeremiah 17:14 and James 5:14-15 are read in [Bible verses before surgery](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-before-surgery). Each can be prayed, and each belongs to its own setting rather than to your test result.

## When the worry is running your days

The [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/health-anxiety/), a UK service, says "See a GP if" "your worries about your health are preventing you leading a normal life" or "self-help is not working." A GP is a family doctor. [Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust](https://oxfordhealth.nhs.uk/ohspic/problems/health-anxiety/) describes its specialist CBT as including "exploring ways to make changes, for example to reassurance-seeking and checking for symptoms." Elsewhere, ask your own doctor about help for health anxiety.

If the fear has turned into thoughts of ending your life, please reach a person tonight. In the United States, call or text 988 for the [988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline](https://988lifeline.org/get-help/what-to-expect/). In Canada, call or text 9-8-8. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, [Samaritans](https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/) is on 116 123. Anywhere else, the [IASP directory](https://www.iasp.info/crisis-centres-helplines/) points to Find A Helpline, which lists lines by country.

## Where to go next

The next time the urge to check comes, say verse 3 once, then [read Psalm 56:3-4 with the verses around it](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-56-3-4).

Or describe it in your own words, and [Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) can suggest a single passage. [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge).

## Words that come up here

Tap a term to see what it means.

**Ceremonially unclean.** In the law of Leviticus, a state of ritual impurity that kept a person from worship for a time.

**Yahweh.** The personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible, printed where many translations have "the LORD".
