An EMT about to start ride-alongs asked on Reddit's r/ems, ["If I just need a few minute break to pray, how is this best accomplished?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/ems/comments/vt98wf/) Another Reddit user answered, ["My partners have done it everywhere from in the passenger seat to back of truck, after handoff etc."](https://www.reddit.com/r/ems/comments/vt98wf/) What follows is for police, fire, ambulance, call handlers and search and rescue, in any country, in the order a working life runs, from between calls to the family at home.

## If you only have a minute

### For the long years

[Exodus 18:17-18](https://biblenudge.com/context/exodus-18-17-18), where somebody watching says the load is too heavy for one person.

### Before the drive home

Read it once, answer one question, name one person.

### Right now

988 in the United States, 116 123 in the UK and Ireland, 13 11 14 in Australia.

## Between calls

The Church of England keeps [a prayer for the emergency services](https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/worship-texts-and-resources/common-worship/common-material/prayers-emergency-services), short enough for the passenger seat: "God our protector, look with compassion on those who work in the emergency services. Give them courage in danger, wisdom in difficulty, and strength in times of need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." In the same Reddit thread, another crew member wrote, ["My Muslim partner prayed in the back of the truck. It was never a problem."](https://www.reddit.com/r/ems/comments/vt98wf/)

Stations differ on praying together. An officer on Reddit's r/Firefighting wrote, ["I lead (or offer someone else to lead) a pre-meal prayer for breakfast and dinner."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Firefighting/comments/zcvyr0/) In the same post he added, "just because nobody complains, that doesn't mean nobody has a problem with it."

## For the long run of shifts, overtime and years

The passage Bible Nudge offers for burnout comes from a day when Moses settled every dispute himself while his father-in-law watched and asked, "Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?" Then comes [Exodus 18:17-18](https://biblenudge.com/context/exodus-18-17-18):

> Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

In verses 19 to 21 he proposes sharing the work among "able men which fear God," and Moses does it. Somebody watching from outside names the load before the one carrying it does, and treats it as a matter of how the work is arranged. Mind's Blue Light survey reported that ["9 out of 10 emergency service staff and volunteers in England had experienced stress, low mood or poor mental health at some point in their career"](https://www.mind.org.uk/media/4862/blue-light-programme-research-summary.pdf), a finding about England. The page on [work burnout](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-work-burnout) reads the passage closely.

Something to do with it, in the vehicle before the drive home: read verses 17 and 18 once, and answer one question in a line: "What are you carrying alone that was never meant to be one person’s job?" Then name one person who could take a share of it, a crewmate, a peer supporter, a chaplain or somebody at home. One name is a full answer for tonight.

## After a call that stays with you

This is trauma, and it has its own name. The [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/ptsd-post-traumatic-stress-disorder/) says PTSD "is a mental health condition caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events," that its main symptom is "when you keep having distressing thoughts about a traumatic event or experience," and it names police officer and paramedic among jobs where it can occur. The [American Psychological Association](https://www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/patients-and-families) says "Most people who experience traumatic events have reactions to those events. But most of them do not go on to develop PTSD," and that early reactions usually fade "within a month or so." The NHS says "See a GP if: you think you have symptoms of PTSD." A GP is a family doctor.

Berger and colleagues [reviewed PTSD in rescue workers worldwide](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21681455/) in 2011, Petrie and colleagues [reviewed ambulance personnel](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29869691/) in 2018, and Beyond Blue's [Answering the Call](https://research-repository.uwa.edu.au/en/publications/answering-the-call-national-survey-beyond-blues-national-mental-h/) surveyed police and emergency services in Australia in 2018.

Job, speaking after everything had been taken from him, said:

> I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; but trouble comes.

It gives you words in Scripture for being unable to settle afterwards. The page on [nightmares](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-nightmares) has a section on dreams after trauma.

## When it weighs more than fear

Norman and colleagues' 2021 scoping review, ["Compromised Conscience"](https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.639781/full), gathered studies of moral injury among firefighters, paramedics and police, including guilt, shame and organizational betrayal, and called the evidence early and limited. Paul, writing about his own hardships, said:

> But we have this treasure in clay vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves.

It is an image of something worth carrying, held in something breakable. [Stress](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-stress) reads verses 8 and 9.

## What services offer after a hard call

NICE, in its [PTSD guideline NG116](https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng116/chapter/recommendations) for England, says "Do not offer psychologically-focused debriefing for the prevention or treatment of PTSD," because the evidence ["showed no benefit for children or adults, and some suggestion of worse outcomes than having no treatment."](https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng116/chapter/Rationale-and-impact) The [Cochrane review](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7032695/) by Rose, Bisson and Wessely says "The routine use of single session debriefing given to non selected trauma victims is not supported." Services using Critical Incident Stress Management describe it as a wider system than the single session those studies tested, and that disagreement is still open.

The [International Association of Chiefs of Police](https://www.theiacp.org/sites/default/files/2022-03/259348_IACP_Police-Chaplains_p1%5B1%5D.pdf) says a police chaplain provides "emotional, moral, and spiritual support," and that while chaplains may belong to one faith, "they provide support to all officers." The [International Conference of Police Chaplains](https://icpcchaplains.org/about/about-icpc) aims for "an effective law enforcement chaplaincy program in every agency."

## When the job changes what you believe

Somebody twelve years into EMS wrote on Reddit's r/ems that ["my job has impacted my thoughts and beliefs."](https://www.reddit.com/r/ems/comments/sk2rx7/) Another Reddit post there begins, ["Being in emergency medicine really makes me reflect on my faith quite often."](https://www.reddit.com/r/ems/comments/1okz9kg/) If your faith is shaking, [doubting God](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-doubting-god) is written for that.

## Rescuers in Scripture

In [Jeremiah 38](https://ebible.org/eng-web/JER38.htm), Ebed-melech gets the king's permission, takes men, rags and worn-out garments, and lifts Jeremiah out of a cistern on cords. [Matthew Henry](https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/matthew-henry/Jer.38.7-Jer.38.13), a Reformed commentator, calls him "a stranger and an Ethiopian" who "had more humanity than the princes of Judah." In [2 Samuel 23](https://ebible.org/engwebpb/2SA23.htm), three of David's men break through the Philistine camp to bring him water, and David pours it out to Yahweh: "Isn’t this the blood of the men who risked their lives to go?" The Catholic [Haydock commentary](https://haydockcommentary.com/2-samuel-xxiii) says he poured it "as a libation" because it was obtained "at the hazard of their lives."

In [Acts 27](https://ebible.org/eng-web/ACT27.htm), Paul tells the centurion, "Unless these stay in the ship, you can’t be saved," and everyone reaches land. In [Luke 15](https://ebible.org/eng-web/LUK15.htm), a shepherd searches for one lost sheep until he finds it and carries it home. Rescue in Scripture is done with ropes, rags, permission and a crew.

## For those whose work is watching

In [Ezekiel 33](https://ebible.org/eng-web/EZK33.htm), Yahweh sets the prophet as "a watchman to the house of Israel," which [Matthew Henry](https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/matthew-henry/Ezek.33.1-Ezek.33.9) reads as a "charge given to the prophet." In [Nehemiah 4](https://ebible.org/eng-web/NEH04.htm), guards stand while builders carry materials and weapons. In [Isaiah 21](https://ebible.org/eng-web/ISA21.htm), a watchman is set to "declare what he sees." For a call handler or an officer on nights, these watchers stood their posts as one part of a whole city's work, with others building beside them. [Ezekiel's story](https://biblenudge.com/blog/zeke-name-meaning-bible) begins with his call as a watchman by the river Chebar.

## Verses for badges, helmets, plaques and cards

Isaiah 6:8, "Here I am. Send me!", is Isaiah answering after his vision, which [Matthew Henry](https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/matthew-henry/Isa.6.8) reads as the prophet's own commission. John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends," is Jesus speaking to his disciples on his last night; the [Orthodox Church in America](https://www.oca.org/readings/reference/john/15) prints it among "Jesus’ Last Teachings." Psalm 91:11, "he will put his angels in charge of you," sits in a psalm of refuge that [times of war](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-times-of-war) reads. Isaiah 43:2, "When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned," is God speaking to Israel as a people, and [trials](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-trials) reads it. Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers," is from the Sermon on the Mount. For a gift, one idea is to print the reference with a line of its setting beneath the verse. [Isaiah's name and story](https://biblenudge.com/blog/isaias-name-meaning) tell who answered.

## If Romans 13 has been quoted to you

In Romans 13:1-7 Paul writes to Christians in Rome about governing authorities, taxes, honor and conscience. The [Catholic Catechism](https://www.vatican.va/content/catechism/en/part_three/section_two/chapter_two/article_5/i_respect_for_human_life.html) says "Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another’s life" (2265). The Reformed [Westminster Confession](https://www.opc.org/wcf.html#Chapter_23) says Christians may lawfully hold the office of a magistrate (chapter 23). Both are there to take to your own church.

## For the family at home

[Fortem Australia](https://fortemaustralia.org.au/pillar/get-support/) says family members can reach its support without the responder. In the United Kingdom, [Police Care UK](https://www.policecare.org.uk/) serves police and their families, and the [Fire Fighters Charity](https://www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/) and [The Ambulance Staff Charity](https://www.theasc.org.uk/) serve their services' people.

One idea is to say the Church of England prayer at the start of each shift, with their name in it, and to write it in a card for a graduation. Somebody on Reddit's r/TrueChristian asked, ["Could I please get prayer to pass my Paramedic Certification test"](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChristian/comments/1hszamr/). For a line-of-duty funeral, 2 Samuel 23:16-17 honors what somebody risked, and [funeral readings](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-a-funeral) has more.

## Help, by country

[Fortem Australia](https://fortemaustralia.org.au/contact/) is on 1300 33 95 94, and says it is not a crisis line. If you are thinking about ending your life, please reach a person tonight. In the United States, call or text 988 for the [988 Lifeline](https://988lifeline.org/chat/). In Canada, call or text [9-8-8](https://988.ca/). In the United Kingdom and Ireland, [Samaritans](https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/) is on 116 123. In Australia, [Lifeline](https://www.lifeline.org.au/get-help/national-services/lifeline-crisis-support) is 13 11 14. Anywhere else, [Find A Helpline](https://findahelpline.com/) lists lines by country.

## Where to go next

Tonight, before the drive home, [read Exodus 18:17-18 with the verses around it](https://biblenudge.com/context/exodus-18-17-18), and name one person.

If you are carrying something else, [Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) can take a line about it in your own words and come back with one passage and what surrounds it. [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge).

## Words that come up here

Tap a term to see what it means.

**GP.** The family doctor, in the UK and Ireland.

**Moral injury.** A research term for the weight of events that cut against a person's sense of right.

If somebody you know is carrying this, the link goes straight to the passage and what surrounds it. Nothing here asks them to sign up for anything.
