People arrive at these words from very different places. Somebody writes on Reddit's r/GriefSupport, a few hours after it happened, ["My Hero (My Dad) died a few hours ago"](https://www.reddit.com/r/GriefSupport/comments/1hmcfmx/my_hero_my_dad_died_a_few_hours_ago_to_cancer_i/). Another Reddit user, whose father died the night before Thanksgiving, says in r/Bible ["I'm looking for some versus that I can wrap my head around"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bible/comments/1pdg2dd/my_religious_father_passed_need_some_guidance/). There, a family is ["thinking of putting a short Bible verse on his tombstone"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bible/comments/1bswk6b/bible_verse_to_put_on_a_tombstone/), and a son or daughter is asking ["What is a good bible verse for my dad's funeral?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bible/comments/1i2eid4/what_is_a_good_bible_verse_for_my_dads_funeral/) Whichever of those is yours, there is a place in the Bible where a son grieves his father at length, and nothing in the chapter hurries him. It is the first thing on this page.

## If you only have a minute

### A son's grief in Scripture

Genesis 50, where Joseph weeps over his father Jacob and mourns him for weeks.

### The passage for grief

[Psalm 34:18](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-34-18), "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart."

### If he was hard to love

Two psalms people are pointed to, read in their own settings, and help from Cruse.

### For the funeral or a headstone

Psalm 23, John 14:1-6 and [Revelation 21:4](https://biblenudge.com/context/revelation-21-4), each with a line on where it comes from.

### If it is getting harder

The crisis lines at the end name their countries.

## Joseph at his father's death

Jacob, whom the text also calls Israel, dies in Egypt with his sons around him. The next chapter opens like this:

> Joseph fell on his father's face, wept on him, and kissed him.

That is Genesis 50:1 in the World English Bible. The text gives Joseph room to grieve before anything else is said. It records what he did in the first minutes: he fell on his father, wept, and kissed him.

The rest is set down at the same patient pace. The embalming takes forty days. The Egyptians weep for Jacob for seventy days. Joseph asks Pharaoh's leave to bury his father in Canaan, as he promised, and a great company goes with him. At the threshing floor of Atad, the text says, "they lamented with a very great and severe lamentation. He mourned for his father seven days" (Genesis 50:10). The grief is so visible that the local people give the place a new name.

If you have felt that the world expects you to be back at work by next week, it may help to know that the oldest account of a son losing his father in the Bible measures the mourning in weeks, and lets it be loud.

## Psalm 34:18

The passage this site offers for grief is a single verse:

> Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

It says where God is, and it asks nothing of you first. The verses on either side, 17 and 19, speak of Yahweh rescuing the righteous from their troubles, so the psalm holds nearness and rescue together. The [page on losing a parent](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-the-loss-of-a-parent) sets the verse in its psalm and explains why it was chosen over [Romans 8:28](https://biblenudge.com/context/romans-8-28), and you can [read Psalm 34:18 with the verses around it](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-34-18).

One way to use it tonight is to read Genesis 50:1 and then Psalm 34:18, slowly, one after the other. The first is a son doing what you may be doing. The second says where God is while he does it.

*The things he used every day are often the hardest to move.*

## What is particular about losing a father

Much of what bereavement charities publish speaks about parents in general, and it is worth knowing which is which. Cruse Bereavement Support has a booklet written for this loss, called [My father died](https://www.cruse.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/94149-My-father-died.pdf). Its web page on [losing a parent](https://www.cruse.org.uk/understanding-grief/grief-experiences/losing-a-parent/) covers mothers and fathers together, and says you can feel lost after either death.

On sons and daughters, one large study gives a partial answer. Nadine Marks, Heejeong Jun and Jing Song followed 8,865 American adults between 1987 and 1993 and found that ["a father's death leads to more negative effects for sons than daughters"](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2638056/), including a greater rise in depressive symptoms. That is one historical sample from one country, and an association rather than a rule, so it describes a tendency and says nothing certain about you.

If you looked after your father through his last illness, you have lost a role as well as a person. Cruse, writing about parents generally, says that when the caring ends it "can come as a release and also a loss", and that it can bring a sense of isolation. Both halves can be true in the same week.

## If your father was hard to love

Not everyone reading this lost a father they were close to. Cruse's booklet begins from that honestly: "Not everyone has a happy childhood to look back on." It names relief as something people feel after a difficult parent dies, and the guilt or confusion that can follow the relief. The [page on losing a parent](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-the-loss-of-a-parent) has a section on estranged and difficult relationships, with accounts from people who lived them.

Two verses tend to be offered to someone whose father was absent or unkind, and each reads differently in its own setting.

**Psalm 27:10.** "When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up." It sits inside a plea: the lines just before it ask God not to hide his face and not to abandon the speaker. The Victorian preacher Charles Spurgeon read it as ["a case which might occur"](https://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/treasury-of-david/psalms-27-10.html) rather than a report of what had happened. It is about being forsaken, and for some readers that is exactly the word.

**Psalm 68:5.** "A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation." It comes in a song of public praise, and the note in the NET Bible explains that in the ancient world a king was expected to protect the weak, ["epitomized by the fatherless and widows"](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2068%3A4-6&version=NET). It is about God's care for the vulnerable. What either verse means for a father who was not good to you is yours to decide.

## Father's Day, his birthday, and the dates that come round

Cruse lists birthdays, anniversaries and Father's Day among the days that can be hard after a parent dies. One person on its page puts the long view simply: ["I'm not religious but for the first probably 10 years after my dad died, I used to go and light a candle in church."](https://www.cruse.org.uk/understanding-grief/grief-experiences/losing-a-parent/)

The dates land on other people too. A woman wrote on Reddit's r/Bible that it was her ["husbands 50th birthday and he is mourning the loss of his father from 6 weeks ago"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bible/comments/1pteynj/verse_for_loss_and_birthday/), and she wanted something meaningful to say to him. If that is you, Psalm 34:18 is short enough for a card.

## Readings for his funeral, or a line for his headstone

Church service books do not set a separate reading for a father's funeral. They list funeral readings for everyone, and families choose. Three come up again and again when people choose for a father.

**Psalm 23**, "Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing." A psalm of David, spoken to God, with the line about walking "through the valley of the shadow of death."

**John 14:1-6**, "Don't let your heart be troubled." Jesus speaks to his disciples at their last meal together, and promises to prepare a place for them.

**Revelation 21:4**, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Part of [John's vision of a new heaven and a new earth](https://biblenudge.com/context/revelation-21-4).

For a headstone, one line of any of these serves well. The [page on Bible verses for a funeral](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-a-funeral) goes through what each church's service books list, how people choose, and how to get through reading aloud.

![A folded order of service resting on a church pew](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-death-of-a-father/the-service.jpg)

*Most families choose one or two readings, often with the minister's help.*

## What people say, and what lands

Marie Curie advises against telling a grieving person ["they've gone to a better place" or "it's a good age"](https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/globalassets/media/documents/how-we-can-help/booklets-pdfs-only/when-someone-dies.pdf), because both can make the loss feel dismissed. It is not that simple, though. When What's Your Grief asked its readers about the best and worst things said to them, it found ["some of the EXACT SAME PHRASES were listed on both the best and the worst lists"](https://whatsyourgrief.com/the-case-for-unscripted-grief-support-why-we-no-longer-advise-people-what-not-to-say/). If something someone said has stayed with you, for better or worse, you are not wrong about how it landed.

## Questions people ask

**Is there a Bible verse specifically about losing a father?** Genesis 50 is the clearest account: Joseph weeps over Jacob and mourns him for seven days at Atad, after seventy days of public weeping in Egypt.

**Does "a father of the fatherless" mean God replaces my dad?** Psalm 68:5 praises God's care for vulnerable children and widows. It describes God's care for people left without a father, and you can read it that way while still missing your own dad.

**How long does grief for a father last?** There is no set length. Clinicians use the term prolonged grief disorder only when intense grief continues well beyond what is usual: more than six months under the World Health Organization's ICD-11, and at least twelve months for adults under the American psychiatric manual, [as this review sets out](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10881750/).

## Words that come up here

Tap a term to see what it means.

**Jacob, or Israel.** Joseph's father. Genesis uses both names for him, and his death closes the book.

**Atad.** The threshing floor beyond the Jordan where Joseph mourned his father for seven days.

**Prolonged grief disorder.** A clinical term for grief that stays intense and disabling well beyond the usual time. It is not a label for ordinary grief.

**NET Bible.** A modern English translation known for its detailed translators' notes.
