If you watch colleagues use AI tools and feel you are the one who has not learned, or your team has just been told it will adopt them, a survey headline this week may have felt personal. Here is what it found, one free step for tonight, and words to pray while you are still afraid.

On September 29, 2026, PwC published its [Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2026](https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/1/issues/workforce/hopes-and-fears.html), a sample of "49,364 workers across 48 countries and regions and 29 sectors in May and June 2026." It reports that 64 percent of workers used AI at work in the previous 12 months, up ten percentage points year on year, and that daily generative AI use rose from 14 percent to 22 percent. It describes a "core workforce" of 56 percent of workers with lower AI advantage, only two in five of whom say they have the learning and development resources they need; [PwC's press release](https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/news-room/press-releases/2026/companies-risk-losing-ai-savvy-employees.html) says "the majority of workers (56%) are falling behind," which [The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/pwc-survey-workers-ai-engine-room) shortened on September 29 to "PwC survey of 49,000 workers finds most are falling behind on AI skills." These are what respondents said about their own use, confidence and access; your own work and workplace are their own story.

## If you only have a minute

### Tonight

Open one free course or training search below and book its first hour.

### Words to pray

[Psalm 56:3-4](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-56-3-4), which begins "When I am afraid."

## Feeling behind is common, and partly about access

In the same report, 68 percent of daily generative AI users feel very or extremely confident about their job security, against half of the core workforce. Asked what level of risk each issue poses to their personal job security in the coming three years, 57 percent picked economic volatility and 44 percent picked "AI taking on more tasks."

On September 30, 2026, [PwC Australia](https://www.pwc.com.au/media/2026/pwc-survey-finds-australian-workers-split-by-AI-opportunity-as-adoption-remains-uneven.html) reported 1,250 Australian respondents: 91 percent of senior executives had used AI at work, against 39 percent of non-managers. The most cited barriers were lack of opportunity and concerns about accuracy or quality, each 25 percent. That is a national subsample, so it differs from the worldwide results.

## One free first step for tonight

Choose one, open it, and give its first hour a day this week.

- [Elements of AI](https://www.elementsofai.com/), from the University of Helsinki, is described as free and open to everyone, with no programming or mathematics requirement.
- United States: [CareerOneStop](https://www.careeronestop.org/) has career exploration, training search and skills resources. Confirm provider, eligibility and cost on the listing.
- United Kingdom: [Skills for Careers](https://www.skillsforcareers.education.gov.uk/pages/skills-for-life/digital-skills/essential-digital-skills-for-work) says essential digital skills courses are "often free." The [National Careers Service course finder](https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/find-a-course) shows each cost, for example "Free Course, subject to meeting eligibility criteria."
- Canada: the [Job Bank Training Finder](https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/career-planning/find-training) has a "Free courses only" filter and says some opportunities cost money.
- Australia: [Fee-Free TAFE](https://www.dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe) lists "technology and digital" among its priority areas; the states and territories set eligibility.

## Psalm 56:3-4, for the week

Bible Nudge's passage for fear is Psalm 56:3-4, under the heading "It starts by admitting the fear":

> When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Psalm 56 is David's prayer while in danger from enemies. It moves between fear and trust rather than treating the fear as something to get past first. It gives you permission to start from "When I am afraid" exactly where you are, words to say between one tool announcement and the next, and a line about what to do while still afraid. [Matthew Henry](https://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/psalms/56.html), Reformed, reads it as David's movement toward trust while the danger remains, and [Enduring Word](https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/psalm-56/), evangelical, as a confession made in fear. The pages on [fear of failure](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-fear-of-failure) and [fear of the future](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-fear-of-the-future) read it for an exam or an event ahead.

Say [Psalm 56:3-4](https://biblenudge.com/context/psalm-56-3-4) once before the first meeting or login of the day, and hold the question: "What are you afraid of right now, if you say it plainly?"

## What the fear is usually made of

Being the only one, on Reddit in r/Teachers, September 16, 2026: ["I feel like I’m the only member of my staff not using it."](https://www.reddit.com/r/Teachers/comments/1whuu1x/i_feel_like_im_on_an_island_when_it_comes_to_ai/) The constant message, on Reddit in r/cscareerquestions, April 20, 2026: ["I keep hearing the constant narrative - if you don't use AI, you'll be left behind."](https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/1sqg6rc/why_do_people_say_if_you_dont_use_ai_youll_get/) The first job, on Reddit in r/AskIreland, September 23, 2026: ["the process for deciding who even gets an interview is entirely decided by AI."](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskIreland/comments/1w7bctv/)

The American Psychological Association's [2024 Work in America survey](https://www.apa.org/pubs/reports/work-in-america/2024) of US workers reported that only 18 percent knew their employer had an official policy on acceptable AI use, while 35 percent intentionally used AI monthly or more. Feeling behind may partly be that nobody has said what the rules are.

## If you are older, or just starting out

AARP reports that [34 percent of workers and job seekers aged 50 and over](https://www.aarp.org/advocacy/older-workers-fear-age-discrimination-2025/) worried AI could affect their job security, and that only 12 percent of older workers had taken training or classes on using AI for work. That is a fact about access, which a worker can ask about.

For early-career workers, [PwC's 2025 Youth Employment Index](https://www.pwc.co.uk/economic-services/assets/youth-employment-index-2025.pdf) reported a sharp deterioration in the UK youth jobs market and asked whether AI is displacing some entry-level roles. The causes are an open question.

## What you can ask at work

The [TUC](https://www.tuc.org.uk/research-analysis/reports/ai-and-employment) says workers and unions should have a voice in how AI is introduced. The US [Equal Employment Opportunity Commission](https://www.eeoc.gov/ai) says employers remain responsible under federal employment-discrimination law when they use AI in hiring, monitoring, promotion or termination, even through a vendor.

These describe process and rights. Rules depend on your country and workplace, so ask your employer or union what applies. Questions to bring to a manager, HR or a union representative: what tools are being introduced, what tasks they affect, what training is available, how outputs are checked, and how a worker can challenge a wrong result.

One line on Reddit turns the fear into a verdict. In r/cscareerquestions, April 20, 2026: ["The people who are using AI will succeed and those who don't will perish."](https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/1sqg6rc/why_do_people_say_if_you_dont_use_ai_youll_get/) Our own wording for a friend: "That sounds like a lot to carry. What is the part that worries you most?" and "Do you want help finding one place to start, or do you want to be heard first?" For a manager: "What would make this feel possible for you this month?" Nobody can promise an outcome, and a friend helps most by offering a specific time, such as a Thursday call or a walk.

## Scripture about skill and work

Exodus 31:1-6 and 35:30-35 name Bezalel and Oholiab, filled "in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship," with a heart "that he may teach." Skill is treated as received and passed on; Protestant and Reformed commentators read it as God-given craftsmanship. In Luke 5:1-11 fishermen who caught nothing all night hear "Don’t be afraid" from Jesus, and their work changes its stated purpose.

To start a workday, Psalm 90:17, attributed to Moses, prays "establish the work of our hands for us." The Anglican [Book of Common Prayer](https://www.bcponline.org/Collects/collects.html) has a collect asking God to "give us grace to do our work faithfully."

## Where the churches stand

They overlap on dignity and responsibility and differ in emphasis. The Catholic Church's [Antiqua et nova](https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2025/01/28/250128b.html) (January 28, 2025) says AI must "respect human dignity and promote the integral development of the human person and society." The Southern Baptist Convention's [2023 Resolution 3](https://www.sbc.net/resource-library/resolutions/on-artificial-intelligence-and-emerging-technologies/) calls for engaging AI from a place of eschatological hope rather than fearful rejection. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Orthodox, told the [AP](https://apnews.com/article/2d5765621d591fa4e58ac8f60df1a3d4) in 2025, "There is nothing more sacred than the human being, with whom God Himself shared His nature."

## Where to go next

If a night feels too heavy, please reach a person. In the United States, call or text 988 ([988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline](https://988lifeline.org/)), or use [Crisis Text Line](https://www.crisistextline.org/text-us/), which says "Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a volunteer Crisis Counselor." In Canada, call or text 9-8-8. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, [Samaritans](https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/) is on 116 123. In Australia, [Lifeline](https://www.lifeline.org.au/) is 13 11 14 and [Beyond Blue](https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/talk-to-a-counsellor) is 1300 22 4636. Anywhere else, [Find A Helpline](https://findahelpline.com/) lists lines by country.

One next step: tonight, open one free course or training search from the list and book the first hour, then say Psalm 56:3 once before work tomorrow.

[Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) can also take a line about what you are carrying, in your own words, and come back with one passage and what surrounds it. [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge).
