If a headline about a joint supplement and dementia reached you tonight, here is the study in its authors' own terms. The supplement is glucosamine, and the paper is [Hyperglycosylation is a metabolic driver of Alzheimer's disease](https://doi.org/10.1038/s42255-026-01538-4) by Tara R. Hawkinson, Zizhen Liu, Roberto A. Ribas and colleagues, published in Nature Metabolism on June 9, 2026, mainly from the University of Florida ([release of the same day](https://mbi.ufl.edu/2026/06/09/study-links-joint-pain-supplement-to-accelerating-dementia/)). The human part is an association seen in existing health records, and the release calls the results "preliminary and require validation in a human clinical trial."

## If you only have a minute

### Tonight

Put the bottle with its label, how long and how often it has been taken, and your questions in one bag for the doctor or pharmacist.

### The question

"What do you make of this study for him or for her?"

### Words to pray

[Isaiah 40:11](https://biblenudge.com/context/isaiah-40-11), a shepherd who leads gently.

## The one thing to do tonight

Raise it with the person's doctor or pharmacist, at the next appointment or with a call to the pharmacy. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says ["It's important to tell all your health care providers about all dietary supplements and medications you take,"](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/know-science/how-medications-and-supplements-can-interact/talk-with-your-health-care-providers) and adds, "You could also bring the bottles of the products to the health care provider's office." The National Institute on Aging says a list should give ["the name of each medicine or supplement, the amount you take, and time(s) you take it"](https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/medicines-and-medication-management/taking-medicines-safely-you-age).

Our own suggestion for the bag: the bottle with its label, how long it has been taken and how often, and one question, "What do you make of this study for him or for her?" The NHS says ["Do not stop taking any prescribed medicine without first talking to your doctor."](https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/herbal-medicines-and-complementary-therapies/) The pharmacist should also see the whole list, since the NCCIH reports glucosamine may increase the effects of [anticoagulants such as warfarin](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/know-science/how-medications-and-supplements-can-interact/some-supplements-may-increase-the-effects-and-side-effects-of-medications). Decisions about any medicine or supplement belong to the doctor or pharmacist and the person taking it.

## What the study reports

The records came from University of Florida Health: 41,884 people with mild cognitive impairment, which the paper calls "a prodromal phase rather than a definitive dementia diagnosis," and 24,481 with Alzheimer's disease-related dementias. Glucosamine use came from physician notes and prescription records; about 8 percent of patients had documented use, and median follow-up was about five years. The paper's wording is "we observed a 25% increase in the proportion of patients with MCI transitioning to ADRD in the glucosamine user group."

That 25 percent describes a proportion: of the people with mild cognitive impairment, how many went on to a dementia diagnosis, compared with non-users. It is a comparison between groups, so it can be held as information about groups of people rather than a forecast about the person you care for. [ScienceDaily](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/09/260927033754.htm), on September 27, 2026, called it a large retrospective analysis of patient health records supported by human-brain and mouse experiments, and [AARP](https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/glucosamine-dementia-death-risk/), on July 10, 2026, called the glucosamine group "slightly more likely" to be diagnosed.

Glucosamine was not randomly assigned in these records, and the authors call for "a well-designed, double-blind clinical trial." A [July 23, 2026 medRxiv preprint](https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.07.23.26358748v1.full) reported similar risk-direction patterns for some other supplements and said this "qualifies the clinical interpretation" of the original signal. The brain-tissue work was in post-mortem brains and mice, and a separate mortality comparison in people already diagnosed is a different outcome. The National Institute on Aging says ["No vitamin or supplement has been proven to prevent Alzheimer's in people."](https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/alzheimers-and-dementia/what-do-we-know-about-diet-and-prevention-alzheimers-disease)

*Everything for the appointment.*

## Isaiah 40:11, words to pray with the bottle in your hand

The passage Bible Nudge offers for caring for someone is Isaiah 40:11, in the World English Bible:

> He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

And in the King James, for anyone who learned it that way:

> He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

Isaiah 40 describes God returning to a people worn out by a long ordeal. Verse 8 says "the word of our God stands forever," and the shepherd covers the flock, the lambs carried in his arm, and the ones walking with their young. A carer who is afraid of having done harm can find a place in it: among the ones led gently, at the pace they can manage, while the responsibility stays theirs. Read [verse 11](https://biblenudge.com/context/isaiah-40-11) aloud once, then write down the two or three questions for the appointment. One question to hold: "Who is looking after you while you look after them?"

Three commentators read the verse side by side. [Matthew Henry](https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/matthew-henry/Isa.40.9-Isa.40.11), Reformed, reads it as God's care for "those that are with young, that are therefore heavy," and says the shepherd "considers their frame." [Enduring Word](https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/isaiah-40/), evangelical, says the shepherd "knows how to gently lead those who are with young." [Haydock's Catholic commentary](https://www.bibliaplus.org/en/commentaries/102/george-haydocks-catholic-bible-commentary/isaiah/40) reads "those that are with young" as those who "have lately had young lambs." For the long view of dementia care, see [dementia caregivers](https://biblenudge.com/blog/bible-verses-for-dementia-caregivers).

## When the worry is about having done harm

[Family Caregiver Alliance](https://www.caregiver.org/resource/emotional-side-caregiving/) lists caregiver guilt that includes "guilt over not having done enough to have prevented them from getting sick in the first place." The [Alzheimer's Society](https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/blog/guilt-dementia-how-manage-guilty-feelings-carer) wrote on March 17, 2025 that carers "may feel guilty, even when they are making good and careful choices." Worry, guilt and regret are never a measure of love or faith.

Carers talk about the medicine side of it too. Posted on Reddit in r/dementia on June 19, 2026: ["the medication piece has been the hardest part"](https://www.reddit.com/r/dementia/comments/1uaaznh/my_grandmother_has_dementia_and_kept_missing_her/) and "she'd forget she even has pills to take, let alone whether she took them." On Reddit's r/Alzheimers on May 18, 2026, in a thread about a relative who had found a supplement he thought was a cure, one person wrote ["we'd tell her we'd talk to her doctor about it"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Alzheimers/comments/1tga6oo/what_do_you_tell_them/).

One line carers turn on themselves, posted on Reddit in r/dementia on April 15, 2025: ["Sometimes I kick myself that I should have switched neurologists earlier"](https://www.reddit.com/r/dementia/comments/1bdoamk/refusing_dementia_medication/). Our wording for that: "I made the best choices I could with what I knew then, and tonight I'm asking the people who can look at his whole list." The Alzheimer's Society calls the recurring feeling the ["guilt monster"](https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-support/publications-and-factsheets/dementia-together-magazine/dealing-feelings-guilt-support).

## Three scenes for a worn-out carer

In World English Bible wording, Elijah lies down under a juniper tree and sleeps, and an angel touches him and says, "Arise and eat!" (1 Kings 19:5-8). When Moses' hands grew heavy, "Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset" (Exodus 17:12). Jesus says to the apostles, "You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile," because "they had no leisure so much as to eat" (Mark 6:31). They give a tired person fed and let sleep, two friends holding up heavy arms, and an invitation to rest from Jesus himself. One small version of each this week: a meal somebody else makes, an afternoon taken by someone you ask, one hour kept for yourself.

Tonight, put the bottle, its label and your questions in one bag, read Isaiah 40:11 once aloud, and leave the rest until you have asked.

If you would like a passage for another worry, [Bible Nudge](https://biblenudge.com/) takes a line in your own words, and [Find a passage](https://biblenudge.com/nudge) is where it starts.
